Kitchen makeover wall knocking down dilema

Have moved house recently. We need to redo the kitchen, it is long and narrow about 5m x 3m, with very ugly arch between kitchen and backdoor /obby area. the question is do we knock down the archway and move some of the kitchen into the lobby area (which by the way is really used as the main entrance) or do we knock down another wall and incorporate the dining room as well. This would make total length almost 11m long and between 3m and 3.50m wide. The real stickiing point is the fact we will be walking through middle of kitchen/diner with dogs, muddy boots etc, also where to put coats that are currently hanging up in lobby.

It's quite a personal decision whether you prefer open plan or a separate kitchen so do what suits you. If you were going to go for open plan i don't think I'd knock down the wall though. I'd have kitchen all along one wall, move the bathroom to the kitchen then have a bigger hall with a bit of storage or possibly a study area or something. In terms of resale some buyers would love it but some would hate it so only do it if it improves how you live in the space.

First of all removing all the stuff that doesn't belong in a living room will help. The living room feels like a closed off space because it looks so different compared to the dining room and kitchen. Everything is white and has a nice tiled floor. I would suggest continuing with this in the living room or you could put the wallpaper from the dining room in the living room as well. Having a floorplan would help when designing the space, but I'll try my best without a floorplan. Where the fireplace goes I would suggest letting someone make a custom cupboard. You can hang the tv on the space above that cupboard and make that the tv station. I would remove the sofa from the wall and move it closer to the "fireplace". Add a nice carpet and a coffeetable. Add a floor lamp and pick a different light fixture. If you want you can also create a seperate reading nook. I hope this helped.

Dear Angie, How exciting for your son and fiance buying and renovating their first home. We all know that getting the layout right is the most important thing you need to do when you renovate. The ground floor interior layout needs careful planning and take into consideration what are the young couple’s plans concerning the house for the present and near future. If an extension is relevant in the next 3-5 years, I would suggest drawing plans with an extension in mind for the current renovation. Having a plan in hand including the extension, will enable them to make the best decisions in terms of where to locate each function (kitchen, diner etc.). This will also let them see where and on what would be best to spend their present budget. For the first floor, I would take out the built-in wardrobes/ airing cupboard and enlarge the rooms. It's tricky to say without a plan, but some things to consider:

- An eat in kitchen makes a great family space and will increase the resale appeal of the property

- A clever kitchen designer will be able to work in a solution for boot and coat storage (again this is tricky without a plan). Perhaps a small boot cupboard/shelf just outside so you take your boots off before coming into the house.

- A long narrow room can feel cramped but having a run of kitchen units on one side only will help open up the space.

- Consider open shelving instead of top wall units

- Clearly defined spaces can also break up a longer area, for instance using different flooring.

- Think about the wall colour and keep it light and airy to maximise visual space.
