wall colour advice needed

Hi , me again! So the kitchen is coming along. chimney breast and understairs area have been opened up and are getting plastered. Cooker installation is next week. in the meantime I'm thinking colours. There'll be a zany primary-striped splashback over a black cooker, a chalky violet sink unit and a brass chandelier. What colour shall I do the walls and woodwork?

8 years ago- 8 years agoHi Colourhappy, the floorboards will be varnished in a white ash and the room has one 6' high window which is south facing but looks out over a tiny, high-walled yard, so not particularly light.

Comments (43)hi all, update is I have finally found a photo of someones stairs done in Brintons timorous beastie yellow Ruskin butterfly and its made me decide we are definitely 100% going for this as I love it (see attached pics) on stairs and landing... Floor in hall will be oak herringbone parquet, just wall colour to decide and we have bought new tall skirting so colour to paint this also? i have attcahed apic of the hall currently so you can see our front door with stain glass.. As Ive mentioned before the banister and spindles will be replaces with square spindles with an oak top banister and oak end cap - similar to this houzz pic ... So just to deicide on wall colour and new skirting colour... I really like f&b light blue in a hall with oak parquet but I don't feel this will go with the carpet... Comments (1)In my opinion it depends on budget. The best option is to take off the wood cladding and coving and then get a plasterer in. The budget option is to sugar soap these walls to ensure there is no wallpaper paste residue, then fill and sand any cracks and also use decorators calk to fill cracks in corners and next to woodwork. Then you need to mist coat the walls which is basically a watered down coat of paint. When that is dry it will need two rollered coats of emulsion (3 if it’s a strong colour). A very flat Matt paint shows imperfections least. After the first coat of paint check it for any bits that might need more filling. Comments (63)Hi all-I'm back:). Happy New Year! After a much needed holiday and some down-time, I am back on track! I decided to postpone the redecoration of my office till week after next so that I could take my time in choosing paint colours. I ordered 10 tester colours from Dulux and have been playing with them at work this morning. It's quite incredible how colours on your computer screen look nothing like they do when rolled on white paper or your wall! I'm so pleased I got these tester samples. My plan was to paint my 3 main walls (the only walls that will be painted) a light lilac with the false wall (below my window) a darker grey. But having seen the colours on the wall I could probably get away with a light grey for my 3 main walls and a darker lilac for the false wall-ledge. I want the false wall to stand out and be approx. 2 shades darker than the main walls. Having spoke to Dulux on the phone the woman advised against certain colours as they would make the room feel "closed in". Because it's a small space I do need to be careful not to use too dark a colour for the main walls. I've decided I'm keeping my purple blind so am basing my paint colour choice around the blind, and the grey chairs that I will be ordering from IKEA...attached/uploaded somewhere earlier in this thread:). I've already eliminated a couple of the tester colours simply because I find them too "baby pink"-as if for a newborn baby girl's room (i.e., Lavender Blossom=bottom colour on left) & Soft Montelimar 4=bottom colour on right). I don't want anything too girlie-most of my clients are men:). I've painted 5 colours on the left and 5 colours on the right-hopefully you can make out top to bottom, etc. I like Violet White (the top colour on the left) as a possibility for the 3 main walls, or Goose Down (top left), with Lavender Quartz (4th down on left), Grey Steel 2 (4th down on right) or Chic Shadow (2nd from top on left) as possible colours for my accent false wall (below the window). I love Lavender Quartz but fear it may be too dark for the 3 main walls. So this is where I'm at at the mo! - 8 years agoI'm using the Ronseal varnish shown below. It does show the wood grain through, but it is predominantly paint-like.
And when I can afford it there will eventually be a corner base unit in the niche to the right of the stove alcove, linking it with the freestanding (violet) Belfast sink unit under the window. The sink unit has a black granite worktop. The as future corner unit will orobsbly end up with Ikea butchers block style timber worktop, although I'm open to other (economy) suggestions.
The other kitchen storage will be the built in Victorian pantry cupboard to the left of the stove alcove. And who know what I'll do with the space under the stairs? So far it only needs to house a fridge (or fridge freezer if space allows. I'll have a utility so the freezer could be in there.
PRO8 years ago- 8 years agoThanks Login Interiors! I'll leave these here for reference. I do like the lighter shade. But does introducing this blueish colour add up to too much going on? Do I need a properly 'neutral' neutral? My previous experience with neutral is limited to magnolia. I suppose what I'm looking for is a fresh bright neutral that isn't too grey. My living room is going to be charcoal grey and I need the kitchen to 'flow' within the house, but give a light, bright impression.

8 years agoHi there, been following your progress with interest. It’s really coming together now. For paint colours I would do as Colourhappy suggested in your other post and paint it all white to begin with. You can get bare plaster paint from diy shops buts it’s basically watered down emulsion. Get the flooring in first as this will have an impact on colours. From there if it looks or feels cold then I’d go for a neutral with a green undertone as I always think this looks good in dark spaces and under artificial light. Off the top of my head F&B shaded white and slightly deeper old white, Little Greene French gray and possibly Acre might look good. Get a few testers tho and remember you can always get them colour matched at Valspar or trade decorating centres. Might not be your bag but i did a little mood board, chairs and furniture in a raw rustic wood would also look equally good.
- 8 years agoBig fan of frottage! Ahem. How hilarious. All decorating techniques should be named after rude stuff in future. And thank you so much for the mood board. I've been getting increasingly wary about my 'violet sink unit' plan but that lavender sideboard looks great. My table is an old farmhouse one with white legs and an oiled pine top. I could paint the legs violet , lavender or any other colour. Not sure yet.
