Hallway colour schemes

Hey,

We've posted on here a couple of times and always received good recommendations and ideas so we're back for more advice.

The below pic is our hall and stairway, which leads to our landing. The landing is a similar size to downstairs.

We're thinking of tearing out the banister and replacing it with a natural wood frame and glass finish, both upstairs and downstairs. We'd like the room to feel warm and inviting but not too "in your face" as you walk through the front door. The carpet will be replaced too.

Any suggestions and recommendations are most welcome. Thank you.

When you say banister do you mean handrail? The joinery company I'm associated with do heaps of these makeovers. It's a very popular choice so go for it. You can swap the handrail to a timber one and have glass on the sides as opposed to spindles. The glass can be in big or small pieces and can be inserted direct into the base rail or you can have glass holders. You can leave the side of the stairs as they are or also have them laminated in timber to match the handrail. It looks lovely when it's done.

Below are a couple of pix explaining the above post:

One has thin glass

strips and the stairs tread sides are left painted (cap still to be added to the newel post) and the other shows larger pieces of glass with laminated stair tread sides and iron decorative inserts. Do be aware that if you're looking for one big piece of glass there is a maximum size to comply with regulations.

I find that if you are using different colors in different rooms, that it helps if they are harmonious. Using a color wheel- many available online- find colors that are complementary or analogous to each other. Also using the same tones in different colors helps. For example, don't use a pale pastel in one room adjacent to a bold color.

Thank you again for all these thoughts. The windows used to have Roman blinds with a pair of dress curtains framing the door. I think we'll probably do the same again. As to the other wall for a rad, certainly something to think about. At the moment it's designated has having a console table as its where the phone/broadband services are. The wall above will have a wall light, mirror and the central heating stat. It's the only wall for a table. I do like the grey/pale gold colour scheme with a bit of teal. We also need to recarpet, recurtain and decorate the dining room so I'm thinking about running the same carpet as the hall into the dining room and dialling up the furnishings in the dining room too echo the hall colour scheme. We've got a very traditional light fitting in there and Victorian-style mahogany furniture which can't be changed but could be reupholstered. The jury is still out on the rads I'm afraid. I agree it would look very busy on that wall. Oddly, although it's the front door of the house it's rarely used as 99% of visitors come in the side door of the house into the utility room. What's that all about?

😂oh my goodness! We’ve spent a fortune in sample pots! Lots of Little greene, mylands… all the greens in the world! Your tiles is gorgeous!!! Because it’s quite bold, I feel it would need to have a bold, dark colour on the wall to bring everything together! Even if a darkish hallway, it does work 👍🏻. We were set on Calke green until someone on instagram mentioned about green smoke. We’ve got a sample pot and that was it! OH fell in love with it! 🤷🏻‍♀️😂👍🏻
