Help! I can’t stop killing!

This is my doorstep/porch and the pic with the shrubbery is the view looking out from the door. Ever since we’ve moved in I’ve tried to have a planter there in that position on the left of the door. But whatever I put there just dies except for those silvery fern like plants that seem to be ok. Has anyone got any ideas for what I could keep alive there? Not sure I care what anymore, just something that will live and soften up my doorway a bit. And preferably won’t need watering every 5 mins either...
Looking out from the door, it faces E/SE - so the sun is out on the drive in the morning but blocked by early lunch. Not sure the sun actually ever reaches the porch anyway and obviously no rain gets there either.
Alternatively, I could just get a faux plant? But again, if so, what?
Btw, the planter itself is expendable.

6 years agoThanks rachelmidlands that’s really helpful. I love this artificial plant in my kitchen at the moment but Just a bit nervous with outdoor ones. Like artificial grass, some look indistinguishable from the real thing and others much less so...

Comments (3)You could add another stop cock where you want the new stop cock to go and just leave the old stop cock fully open, if the old stop cock isn't in the way. If you have old lead pipe up to your stop cock i'd be very careful if you try moving it. If its the old black alkathene pipe or the newer blue pipe then you can move it quite easily with basic plumbing skills. If you can't do any plumbing then get a professional in. Comments (21)Aren't they inset into the glass though? It's too late for us 😔 We are getting an air con unit though. It's about £1200 and although it won't be used a huge amount (it's a heater as well) it will be half the price of getting proper blinds in and will be instant cooling as I think the room will still feel warm even with blinds. 6 years agoThanks for all your comments! I would like something there - when I plant a pot up it always looks great ... until it starts dying. Maybe I just need to sort my watering and drainage....
But here’s an old pic of the front from the end of the drive if that helps. It needs a bit of substance as it’s a nicely proportioned porch...
