Comments (1)Hi. It would be a little sacrilegious to paint the whole thing as its good quality oak with some age by the looks of it. i would suggest you paint the spindles, baserail and the visible tread and have the handrail and newel posts rubbed down and polished dark black / brown this is a classic but far more current look that will work well. Also the spindles would be extremely laborious to rub fully back to bare and re-polish in situ. hope that helps :-)...See MoreWill a dark worktop work with an oak parquet floor in the kitchen ??
Comments (6)I think it would depend on the tone of the oak and the tone of the walnut. I don’t think yellow/orange oak would work with a reddish walnut, but an almost black walnut might work with a grey toned oak floor, especially if there’s darker tones in the oak. However, I would agree not to mix— you already have oak parquet and marble tiles. I think adding a third strong texture could be a step too far. If it was me, I’d either get an oak worktop, marble effect worktop, or a worktop that works with the tones within the marble. Speaking from experience btw—I once combined a harlequin floor, cherry effect worktops, travertine and accent patterned tiles. I hated it, it made me so uncomfortable that less than two years later I covered the splashback tiles with panelling painted to tone with creamy whites on doors and floor. Such a relief! And a much more flexible starting point for adding other colour/bursts of pattern....See MoreDark wood panelling hallway ideas
Comments (5)That is a lovely bit of panelling. I love it in its natural form in period homes like Hatfield House, but I do think painting it is a possible option to update a private home. When was your house built? The fireplace doesn’t look in keeping so maybe is a later addition? I think painting the beams white, or maybe taupe, will freshen it all up but still keeps the character. You may find then that the natural panelling doesn’t feel quite so dark....See MoreEnclosing original porch OR new internal vestibule?
Comments (3)I would consider commissioning a joiner to make a bespoke door for the porch with a shaped top. I have a Victorian terrace with a small porch - our entire street have added outer doors over the years. Ours was very ugly when we got it and we considered removing completely, but the heat loss was a big concern - so I found a joiner to make something that was more in-keeping. Whilst It isn’t as it would have been originally, it looks fairly authentic because the top is shaped to fit. Here’s a couple of shaped top doors for ideas. Mine is the pale blue rounded one (with the ugly before photo too!...See MoreEmily
