Dark wood hallway ideas?
Comments (12)Hi we specialise in period detailing and panelling and staircases particularly in oak. I will attempt to give you some suggestions from our point of view. //Panelling// My first thought is to keep all of the panelling but to add a bit more style to it which could easily be achieved by adding a simple mouding around the panel as shown below, you can easily source mouldings from a local hardware shop. You could also add a Dado moulding and run it along the top rail of the panelling that goes up the staircase this would make the panelling look really nice. I would then prime and paint all of the panelling in a light colour to give the entrance a lighter feel. create a coat rack area in the porch with a small bench for taking of shoes and it would look like a really inviting entrance hall! //Staircase// Again I think the staircase would look really good painted or stripped and whitewashed like a scandinavian style pine floor, this would lighten the whole area. I really like it when staircases are painted except the handrail however It would need to be stained and polished to look like a contrasting dark hardwood. If you were thinking of installing a new traditional style staircase there would be a cheaper option which would be to clad the strings and posts and replace the hand rail and turnings for oak versions. However I personally would be painting it or whitewashing it and adding mouldings here and there if you need to. good luck!! Comments (6)As Sonia said - there is a huge array of Victorian tiles! I can highly recommend a company in Derby called Alternative Tiles (they work nationally too) - they specialise in Victorian tiles. When I had my small porch done, I gave them my measurements and they asked what kind of colours I liked. They then did a few different designs for me on their computer. The tiles that you posted from Topps are nice - but because they are essentially normal tiles, they don’t give you much variety or many options. If you go for a more authentic version such as the ones that Sonia has shared or the type that I described, you will get a truly bespoke end product. Be warned though - it’s not cheap because you need a specialist to lay them! We joke that our (tiny) porch is the most expensive square metre in our entire house. The tiles used in the more authentic versions are usually from a company called Original Style. I’ve hopefully linked their Victorian brochure. https://www.originalstyle.com/media/106774/original-style_vft_june-2019.pdf...See MoreBeam colour - what would you do?
Comments (36)Corrine, that kitchen looks fabulous! I love those roughly stripped planks, what a great idea! Thanks for the paint suggestion, I've been looking at Portland Stone and French Grey Pale samples from Little Greene, but will get Slaked Lime as well. Never heard of Tikkurila, my decorator swears by Dulux Trade Diamond for scrubbable paint, so I normally try to match colours to their palette (which is a pain at times). Karen, that is impressive! I imagine how much patience and time you've put into cleaning your beams. I admit, 10 or more years ago I'd probably would have tried to do it your way... these days, and with the amount of work the house needs, I'm just happy to get it clean and functional... At the moment I need to decide what to do about the staircase... I'm not sure if I should encourage my husband to continue stripping (he's done the paneling, didn't even start on the spindles), filling the house with wood dust and other yucky goo stuff, or just tell him to have them painted white and be done with it! The whole thing is oak, not pine, so I'm hesitating, but I'm rather fed up with the never ending mess... This is an older Christmas pic, where you can see the staircase better:...See MoreHelp with paint colours in dark hallway!
Comments (6)Just wanted to say such a lovely hallway and I wouldn't say it's dark at all!!! Please don't counteract your dark feeling by painting it all light. It needs colour, what I'm not sure but it's going to be lovely!!...See MorePerky Designs
