design dilemma for kitchen doors

We recently did a massive refurb project and I underestimated the cons of an open plan Kitchen. Whilst it gives a good open feel to the ground floor, it also creates a lot of noise and chaos when the food is being prepared or cooked and if we are hosting at the same time. I was wondering what’s the best way to close of the kitchen from the living areas without losing on the light from the skylight and the patio doors. I thought sliding Crittal doors or 2 fixed frame crittal opening outwards would work? Any thoughts welcome.

Comments (11)Thank you Kia. My neighbour recently had an extension done an she did exactly what you suggested, putting the w/c and utility where the kitchen currently is. However, she extended a little bit to the side and 4m to the rear so it was ideal really. We love the open plan feel. I've got two little boys and it's so frustrating not being able to cook and see him in the dinning room at the same time. :-( I like the idea of having the kitchen door open and blocking the dinning room door instead but we are open to any idea really. Comments (10)Before I get stuck into the design I’m working on this week - just quickly looked at this dilemma and wondered if you could open up your kitchen area into the garage - keeping a bike/garden equipment store at front - but getting more space to have a kitchen living area with walk in utility area and pantry etc ... and adding garden doors on this south facing wall for more daylight ... sorry it’s brief - but I have a lot to do today ! Comments (6)Personally I think you need to bin the idea to put the kitchen there because it divides the space in such a way that there are four areas that have no apparent purpose and are not really big enough to do anything with. I suggest you blank out the kitchen cabinet position and the utility room on the plan and give the blank space to a kitchen professional to show where they would put the cabinets....See MoreOpen Plan Kitchen/Living/Dining Design Dilemma
Comments (7)Oval dining tables are able to seat everyone comfortably and a good choice. Not so easy to come by however! Maybe a glass top table would add a bit of sparkle/bounce light around the area? If you have kids an oval or round extending to oval best. My dining table is oval with extra leaf added to round top and I keep it as extended. Might be easier to find round to oval than just looking for fixed oval top? Choose a sofa with neutral but washable loose covers (ie machine wash) and add colourful cushions to make a statement. As your wood in new kitchen is dark and warm tones, follow the warm tones with dining table/chair/sofa legs in dark wood....See More- 8 years ago

PRO8 years agoI think Crittall doors are a good idea. You will still have the light from your patio, they will stop sounds and visually will separate different zones of an open plan.
Unfortunately, they won't isolate all sounds completely and smell from the kitchen when you're cooking.
You can find different alternative systems.
