Which bar stools?

I'm shopping for barstools for my newly installed kitchen. The two barstools I'm looking at are very, very similar, so perhaps this is a slight much of a muchness question, but I'm struggling!

These are the contenders:

Essentially I slightly prefer the look of option one because it's a cleaner design and has brushed steel base instead of chrome, but it's faux leather instead of real and isn't as comfortable as option 2.

Option 2 is more comfortable and offers the real leather, which I love. However, the design is a little fussier (side view in particular) and it's a chrome base instead of brushed steel.

Price is fine for either. This is the (mostly) finished kitchen. There will be 4 stools in an L-shape, not just 2 on the one side! These pictured are Ikea's cheapest to tide us over.

What would you go for? Quality and comfort or overall look?

I think I saw your photos on another thread! I like the simplicity of your cheap IKEA ones, all black works well.

However that doesn't answer your dilemma. Frustrating isn't it, what you really want is real leather brushed steel - maybe someone has some links.

I too have a thread and ideasbook for bar stools. Tricky to get it right and with the Internet too many choices.

My reservation about the shiny chrome base is I had stools with a similar base and they rusted quite badly ( could of course be my lack of looking after them tho!).

Yes exactly, real leather with brushed steel and a super comfortable chair would be ideal. I'm finding the whole business of getting something that works in the space a bit stressful! Good to know about the chrome, definitely don't want them to rust. I was hoping that they would last since they're steel underneath the chrome, but if it's going to rust then maybe it's best to forego the chrome option and look elsewhere.

I do like the idea of white stools, if you fancy painting the stools. I would personally paint the walls white and hang some bright coloured art (maybe with some yellow accents) - it will brighten the area. If you don't want to spend too much on the paint, either browse through the discounted section in B&Q and homebase, or buy cheap white paint (£4.00 for 5L homebase brand) and mix part of it with a paint tester of your choice for off white shade (like white + beige for lovely warm light shade of roman stone) - you're lucky to have such a lovely and well lit kitchen!

Comfort & design. We have the same as in the 2nd picture which are really comfortable to sit on and they look great too. So many we looked at especially with no back support whilst may look great are not that good to sit on for any length of time. When we have family/friends round they are more than happy choosing to spend an evening sat in the Eames style stool over our sofa. As we have an open plan kitchen/living/ dining area, we are also thinking of choosing a mix of colours in the same design to replace the chairs at our dining table.

If you want the seats to swing out from the island be sure to check that the island is substantial enough to take the load, also that the island is well anchored to the floor. If you consider the arm is for example 2 feet long, then sitting on the extende seat will be the same as applying your full weight to a crowbar, two people sitting on one side would destroy a normally constructed island. Similarly, if fitted to a wall make sure that they are anchored well and that the wall structure is suitable. A nice idea to save space though

Out of the two, I would go for the leather ones. After a while you won't even notice whether they're brushed or shiny finish, because you'll be used to seeing them, but you will notice if they're uncomfortable or if the faux leather starts to wear.

At least you know where you are with leather and it wears so well. I would always go for a leather above faux - the same when I buy handbags as well.

Also psychologically, with leather, there's a subconscious perception of quality even if folks don't consciously notice what it's made of.

Yes Ribena this is where I’m at right now! I notice the real leather and always go for it in clothing and other goods as I can tell the difference. And comfort is always preferable, certainly as the stools are for sitting on above all.

Atlantic do 7 Bar Stools in the brushed steel all with real leather seats, I quite like the Mimi, I really like the Lush and the Delux Paradis.

I'm not sure you've got the room for 4, unless you plan on putting one on the kitchen run side, might look out of place.

Is there a particular reason to have stools that have back rests ? ( ie. older people or under 7’s ) - if not - might be useful to consider stools that push right under the bar when not in use - as this means you can stand and prep at all positions on the island , not just on the kitchen side.

i'm 'bar stool' hunting too!

This thread on here gives some good links, especially for bespoke stools (Gomodern). Loads of possibilities of kegs, fabrics, base style. ( depending however on how much you want to spend!)

Yes, the backrests are a must for us because we have three children ages 5 and under! My main criteria for the stools are: 1) young child friendly (i.e. sturdy with a backrest and wipeable, 2) really comfortable as we and our friends/family spend a lot of time at the island, and 3) something that looks/feels of a nice quality and fits with the more modern style of the kitchen without being cold and harsh. It's obviously quite a light coloured space so I'd like black stools as they sort of visually ground it a bit if that makes sense.

It will definitely fit 4 stools--two on each side (we've got 4 now and there's plenty of space with room to spare).

I've looked at the Delux Paradis and like it, but am not sure about the chair seams and the flimsier-looking footrest...

I don’t like being Debbie downer but I just pictured toddlers climbing and then hanging on the backrest and ripping over. Or climbing up side to get on and a swivel barstool might swivel and kid falls. Not saying you won’t be able to find suitable stools but if I were you I’d only buy if you can see in the flesh and test out best you can all the toddler methods of playing on and climbing up.

I’d be tempted to use the two stools you already have and use high chairs for the children while they are still so small - then re assess when they are older.

The kids are 3.5 years old and 5 year old twins, so no high chairs and no toddlers. They’re pretty good at getting up into the stools without a problem, I just want backs for extra safety. And also because I just find them more comfortable! I actually really dislike the ones we have—will be replacing them ASAP as they‘re too tall and uncomfortable. We just got the very cheapest thing we could find initially!

I can't really choose either as I much prefer the brushed metal than the chrome and would choose that - but if the other one is more comfy....

I had some black padded ones like the ones in your images (not quite as nice!) typical gas lift faux leather on a chrome base. Very comfy as lots of padding but the faux leather ones were super cheap - maybe £55 for a pair, haha.

The chrome was awful and showed every bit of muck and dust and it rusted constantly. They ideally need sealing over with chrome to protect them.

The faux pvc to me (even though I actually work with leather!) worked well as they were always getting grubby (especially when the nephews visited and put their dirty hands all over them, haha) and I had to scrub them down a lot so they endured quite a bit over the years I had them.

The leather on the stools I imagine is similar to an upholstery leather so it will possibly look the same and not have that real leather feel to it (like some of the leather industrial style stools you find) and although I would always choose leather over pvc, if the seats are housing children then you might want to perhaps look at the cheaper end to start with to see how they get on with them. My nephews would spin on them, go up and down on them constantly, knock them over (rolls eyes) and needless to say, the gas lift started to fail on some of them.
