Hi, I’ve researching these types of ceiling edges for a long while now, do you know what it is called please?

I think the easiest route is to take down the light (power off) pull the cable through to give you enough to play with, then clean up any rough surface and use one of the fibrous fillers or polyfilla plaster repair, sand down when dry and paint to match. If you are concerned about not having something to screw to, before you fill the hole you can push a batten up through the hole and glue it down with filler ( apply it to the underside of the batten before inserting then filler side down pull it downward to make the filler adhere to the upper surface of the ceiling, mark where the batten will be to screw to .

As the others have said, laying spotlights all over a ceiling just looks brash. They are best around the edges of the room, where the light bounces off walls and serves to give a nice glow, rather than an industrial glare. And I would absolutely advise keeping the central fitting on a separate circuit for a statement pendant - or at the least advise leaving the wiring for that there and hidden in the ceiling, for the potential for one in the future. Spots are massively overused - I have seen a load of period houses here in London made soulless by removing ceiling fittings and ambient lighting for a carpet of spotlights. spots are one aspect of a good lighting design, but should not light a room on their own - too harsh, too directional. We didn't want spotlights in our loft and we have less height than you. In one room (office) we went with something similar to number 2. Check there's enough headroom for the tallest house member (for us there is about 5cm between my head and the bottom point of the fitting ). And in the bedroom we have a glass pendant which comes down to my shoulder but because it hangs above the bed it's no issue as you can't walk into it. It was something we deliberated over at the time and i'm glad we went with pendants rather than spotlights, doesn't look odd even with the low height. Light 1 look ok but personally i'd select ones you prefer the look of subject to your headheight and bed position

i can't have surface mounted ones really as it's all lathe and plaster ceiling so is going to be hard work. There is already a cable for a strip light so we can have one pendant or bar light in there which would light most of the kitchen run and then we have the hood for lighting over the hob which I always use. And I'm going to try and get the light switch changed to a 3 way so I can have something over the table area separate (switched wall light hanging one) or as suggested, a plug in one I can hook over the table which would give softer lighting. Would I be better handing the bar light in line with the oven ie in the walkway of the units and angling the lights towards the units rather than having it over the back kitchen run?
