Side return extension kitchen/diner layout

We are extending our Victorian terrace into the side return, but not the full length, leaving us with a large L shape room. (our garden is small so we don't want to go out further, and also costs would go up another 5k ish to extend right to the end)
We are soon to be a family of 6 and I really want to get the layout of this room right! We need dining space, good storage space and I really want an island with an overhang so that the kids can sit up and get involved in helping cooking and so there is somewhere for them and friends to sit whilst I'm in the kitchen.
This is what we have sketched up so far. We have put the kitchen in the extension, as it will be light with velux windows, and the dining table at the end where the French doors will be, so that in summer we can open them up and feel like we are in the garden (no space for a big table outside).
The current dining room will become a snug/playroom with an opening straight into the kitchen, and there'll be the original doorway to the kitchen from the hallway.
Do you think this layout works well? Anything we have not considered? I really want to get this right!
(I should mention that we have moved the fridge freezer to the other side onto the end of the run of storage cupboards along the long wall as have managed to squeeze the washer and dryer under the stairs!).
Thanks in advance for any help/suggestions.
Chloe
