Just wondering why you didnt plan your kitchen design around this?

Is that the doorway into your kitchen? It looks very narrow.

Is that your fridge freezer on the left of that pic. Hoping its just a larder unit as if its a fridge freezer you will not be able to open the freezer drawers if you cannot open the door full 90 degrees

Three steps and a hand rail to the left in this photo - so no one falls off the steps - or three steps all the way across and will need to be infront of that bottom door .

I don't know anything about them but think building regulations exist for stairs. I've just copied this link, assume it's correct but probably easier to decipher than building regs website as a starting point

@Carolina thanks. Do you know how that works when you use flooring on steps? Do you build them as standard and then clad them over? I like the angled step idea, sadly our walls are badly out of square so your design kind of feeds you towards the right where as our room skews left, if you see the angle of the tiles.

@Ellie there was a lot to design around. We needed a tall unit for the fridge and wanted one for the boiler housing and ovens. On the wall on the right in the picture there was only space for one tall one before you hit the steel. On the wall opposite the units on the left the height is only 1.88m high, putting any high units that side would have blocked the line of the velux openings. We could have left a gap before starting the bank of units but it would have just looked weird. Doorway is 70cm, same as most the doorways in our Victorian house. The first unit is just a standard unit for storage with shelves, the 2nd unit is the fridge but there's enough space for 2 good size steps with the door fully open.

A little late perhaps, but could you remove the bottom cupboard door and put some baskets on the shelves? It might make the space more usable.

We have steps in our house, just built out of chipboard I believe and they've been clad with laminate flooring, using a strip in the same colour as the floor to finish the edges. I'd discuss it with your carpenter, what his/her ideas are.

Martin, we had the same problem, luckily the builder and kitchen fitter worked together and came up with solutions before we even realised how much they messed things up.

For the drop, the carpenter built a (thick) plywood box that was fixed in place and then tiled over. They used some oak panel for the top thread, it matches the rest of the stairs in the house; I would have wanted to have it all covered in wood but they'd tiled over before asking us. It doesn't look all that nice, but we rarely notice it any more. We choose frame-less pocket doors, so I'm not sure what to suggest about the architrave.

As for the cupboard, I took a few photos for you; basically the kitchen fitter did ask if we would be happy having the door cut and the panel attached to the existing drawer face (we use that cupboard for coats, shoes, etc. not for kitchen stuff...). It doesn't open fully, but enough so I can throw my scruffy shoes in there :))

Thanks all, that's really useful @Luciana We don't mind the cupboard having limited access, it will still open part of the way and might house a vacuum that can be lifted out over the bottom cupboard if need be as its a clear unit with removable shelves. We could make the oak threshold a little wider than the door frame and bring the architrave down to that. Just to decide if we tile or clad them now I guess.
