I have heard some pretty goofy answers about water proofing but that one takes the cake. Yes you need to water proof the whole shower and I sure hope the rest was done right for a curbless shower.

Nothing wrong with a hot mopped floor and this is still the preferred method when done correctly in California. As far as the walls he is incorrect and in my opinion just eliminated himself from further conversations about the project.

I will talk to the contractor directly instead from now on and push on getting the wall waterproof.

catbuilder- I should have said, if I have my faucet by the pocket door wall, would I still have overspray onto to the tub?

Our architect had it shown tempered glass around the shower and I don’t want that. Could I get away with having just a fixed 34” shower screen?

It looks like you have a wall between the shower and the tub. Why would you have overspray onto the tub from anywhere in the shower? I don't get it.

Also, consider putting the entrance to the shower further from the sliding door. Then you won't have to worry so much about spray, water on the floor when someone steps in the room, etc.

Where would you be putting a 34" shower screen? The dimensions of your shower are only 48x42. How would you get in it with 34" blocked?

Pocket door has my major thumbs up, especially for what I say in the next paragraph.

While you're working on these aspects of the design, think through everything with a scenario that you might become disabled. Suddenly. It's upon us NOW. By this I mean plan for easy access in and out of the shower even if someone is helping you. Leave turnaround space if you're in a chair/walker. If you put in a glass panel, will it be easy to remove and substitute a shower curtain if that's what your health calls for? Do you have a handheld showerhead as well as overhead? Make sure the walls are blocked so you can install grab bars if needed. Use a lever on/off instead of separate taps, and be sure it's low enough on the wall for someone who's disabled.. Etc. etc.

If you’re already at framing, and the joists were not designed to be dropped to get the right slope, you’re too late to do this cheaply or well. It has to be done as a renovation project now. Expensive, and not enough people know how to do it either way.

Waterproofing MUST go On Top of the preslope, which is why too many issues occur with the CA hot mop crowd. There are too many doing it WRONG. Flat on the floor is WRONG. Not doing the walls is WRONG. Don’t let the “we’ve done it this way for 30 years” guys intimidate you from having this designed and built correctly. You’ll be the one that pays the price in water damage.

Any glass in shower must be tempered, even a shower screen.

Tangerinedoor - my contractor (who is more knowledgable and seemed to be a perfectionist) mentioned he could do them all open with tempered glass partial enclosure. Since there is no wall between the tub and shower, I thought perhaps a 34" tempered glass shower screen can be used instead of of tempered door.

And yes to ADA shower faucet set question.

Live_wire_oak - oh geez, I asked for this when they were working on the foundation, and our FM sat on it. I could tell the slope for curdless wasn't there once inspection takes place so I spoke with the contractor he said it can be still be done. I hope to talk to our contractor again today. We'll see what he said.

I did get the we've done this 30 years and there hasn't been a problem from our FM.

Your last statement, exactly what I told my husband. I'll work around the FM and hopefully come up with a solution.

I clearly don't understand the "tempered shower screen" thing-y..... I'm trying to picture what happens if you replace a door with a fixed glass panel and then whadda you do if you want to get in the shower? And if you're meaning you'd substitute a 34" glass panel for a glass door + short glass wall, how are you getting into this shower? You've got max 14"?

I have a curbless shower, incidentally. I've churned through some of these issues for myself recently.

I don’t understand why anyone would want a shower open to the rest of the room. Water, water everywhere... There will be water all over the floor and the vanity, necessitating a total wipe down of the room following every shower.

If you did it right, it wouldn't go absolutely everywhere, and there are wet baths deliberately designed to turn the whole bathroom into a shower space, but in this particular instance the danger is that there are going to be puddles of water, spray, slick soap stuff, on the floor right where you step into the bathroom. Very dangerous.

Thank you all. I spoke with our contractor about my concerns, who I trust more as he seemed to be conscientious and a perfectionist. He said he did went back in after I talked to him and adjusted the joist (?sp) to accommodate a curbless shower. He will show me that tomorrow. He reassured me that they will line the bathroom with the membrane.

Tangerinedoor - we will have a slope, they both confirmed that initially.

I will add I was hoping for a totally opened shower but I do realize it’s not the best option considering we don’t have a big enough shower room.

@Neospecies we are getting ready to do our bathrooms. How did things turn out? Do you have any photos before and after tile was set? It would be cool see approach you guys took for waterproofing before tile was set.
