Open Plan Flooring

I’m having difficulties working out how to split the floor in a open plan space between the kitchen tiles and the rest of the wooden floor. The room is L-Shaped but the kitchen will overhang slightly.

The red line is just tiling the kitchen area but means part of the island and a kitchen cupboard will have to go on the wooden flooring.

The blue line is just tiling the walkway but then the island seating will be on wooden floor rather than tiles.

Help! What has everyone else done?

I wouldn't have that, some kitchen units on tiles, some units on wood, the stools on wood...

You have an open plan layout and I do think it's best to keep flooring same throughout.

In your case I'd say it's even more important to keep flooring same as you will avoid all the problems you see...

Why do you not want same flooring?

I just think in a kitchen area, it’s more practical to have a tiled floor rather than wood (which you shouldn’t really get wet etc).

I have got some samples in - one company I’ve found have two that could work. Definately not local bricks as they aren’t nice I have it as brick in the dining area on my picture but was planning on putting it in the kitchen as the dining area will be more glam than industrial. I just wasn’t sure if I should just have it in the kitchen (against the dark shaker hnits to soften them up) or in the dining area as well. Kitchen would be a priority as less tiling than the dining room - so cheaper

Wood effect tiles, lvt eg Karndean is great underfoot unlike tiles which can be freezing. It is OK to get wet too.We have Karndean

Personally, unless it was a really large space I would keep it the same, but if you don’t want to what about this idea.

We have similar, overhanging worktop/cupboards on one side and have stopped tiles where your red line is and then wooden floor. It looks fine; think it would look odd done any other way. H x

Karndean has some pretty terrible reviews on TrustPilot... makes me nervous. We are a large family, dog etc so would worry about scratching.

Thank you got the photo, I like the idea of trying to blend it in.

The builder is proposing tiling the whole kitchen area including the island area and stopping at the final cupboard so the entire kitchen has the same floor.

So another option to consider. Will keep trawling through pinterest for inspiration!

Wood effect porcelain tiles is another option, then the whole floor the same. Does anyone have those?

Stumbled across these.. quite a good idea to incorporate the tiles whilst still maintaining a wood floor throughout...

Using tiles as a ‘rug’ works in open plan and blending like the previous posts ... but in my personal opinion, having all the flooring the same throughout, makes for a more cohesive look.
