Agreeing with the ladies above. I'm sure your surveyor has weighed this up very carefully as there are many factors affecting the decision. For instance..........has the house had a damp proof course injected since it was built? If so, then you shouldn't incur the damp in the first place. People now have central heating, which, also keeps the walls dry. BUT................ Is the exterior rendered? and if so, what with? If it's been done with lime then you would still use lime inside so that the walls breathe. If rendered with lime outside, then damp can still get inside due to it's make-up. If not rendered, water could still penetrate the bricks if they're damaged / decaying or the pointing isn't perfect. Central heating would help keep it dry inside but it can't be used as a fail safe, neither could the damp proof course. You just get water trapped in the walls., and if it can't breathe it will cause damp. Basically, it's a mine field with old houses and I think you're probably best to listen to the expert.

Steve, I would line the walls after rigourous preparation work. One thing you could do is cross line the walls. Basically this is to make good the walls with easi-fill (with the woodchip paper off), rub down and size the walls with a thinned out coat of paste. Let the size dry fully and hang lining paper either vertically or horizontally. Once hung and dried, look at the condition of the walls re-fill the bad areas again and rub down. Just size the filled areas only and then re-line the walls in the crossed direction of the first hang. So if you hung vertically on the first, hang horizontally on the second hang and vice versa. Once complete paint as normal. You should see a marked difference in the smoothness of the walls,

Beano, all my tech is stuff I get from family/freecycle so nothing is permanently installed. A Google thingy in the back combined with an old BT box makes this old telly 'smart', but when it dies there'll inevitably be another generation of obsolete tech being thrown out which I'll gratefully take off people's hands. I'm just as reliant as consumer capitalism as everyone else, just more of a bottom feeder. The remote control for the Google hub works through the logs BTW ;-)

Some years ago I needed a wall repointing with lime mortar and wasn't able to find anybody that used lime mortar. I eventually contacted a company who manufactured the product and asked them who they supplied to in my area (NW). They were very helpful and I was able to find somebody thay way. Might be worth a try.
