Price for tiling a kitchen splashback?

Hi all, I’ve had a price to tile my kitchen splashback in a herringbone style. The tiler has said that I need 5.5sqm of tiles and it will cost £650 to tile...and £350 for a brick pattern. Are these reasonable prices? £650 seems like a lot but the tiles are a slim rectangular shape.

Hi, what price are your tiles per square metre? Eg if they are £30 a sq metre x 5.5 = £165. The rest would be materials like grout and Labour at about £180 a day. Did he say how many days to complete the job? I know herringbone is more labour intensive and fiddlier to lay than straight tiling.

Hello, I do not think this sounds too out of the way. I know it does not seem a lot of tiling but this sort of work (based on a brick pattern) would take a tiler 2 days. So a brick pattern at £350 (which I am presuming includes VAT?) if you break this down in to a day rate it is £175/day which does sound about right to me. Especially if they are providing grout and adhesive!? The herringbone style will obviously will take longer to do and to me the £650 might seem a little steep but you have got to bear in mind how long it will take and maybe the tiler is not a fan of doing it which is why he is charging more!! If he is a good tiler and you have already seen some of his work then to me it is worth paying that little bit more.

Pity you have decided against glass in favour of tiles. We have just done our kitchen and I wanted an easy-to-clean surface for the splash back, so the rough surface of grouting around tiles, and also the indentations on some patterned tiles (which collect grease and grime) ruled them out for me! I went for glass, which the manufacturers matched exactly to the duck egg paint colour on the other walls (just gave them a product code of the paint), and although the initial outlay for the glass was expensive, the surface is so brilliant to keep clean and it looks fab as well. Glass would look good - give you a little reflectance without mirroring everything on the worktop. Also could be a subtle way to introduce some colour. If you use clear glass with screw back type fixings, then you can change the colour now and then by painting the wall behind if you're nervous about colour, or think you would want to change the look now and then. Another option is a stainless steel, which again would add in a little light reflecting but in a grey tone that would work well with what you have.

A pale warm stone coloured splash back would work with the units and complement the rich wood. Have you tried standing one of the floor tiles up against it to see how warm neutrals would look?

If it were my kitchen, Id be inclined to use the herringbone tiles all the way around. I don't think you need to worry about it looking sterile. To me it has, and will retain, a cosy, country kitchen look, pretty much regardless of the tiles you choose. Perhaps consider finishing and painting the walls before you finalise your decision re the tiles? I feel that might help you to make up your mind. Best of luck.

Hi thanks both for your comments. The tiles are £69 a sqm. He will also be including the grout etc but not the tiles. My issue is that the same tiler did my bathroom which is 20sqm with two different tiles at a cost of £1000. So it just seemed a bit toppy. The bathroom was done as part of an extension and the bathroom tile cost was added on as an extra.

Maybe get two other quotes - that will give you clear comparisons.

How big are the bathroom tiles? Because bigger tiles are generally quick and easier to fit and a bigger surface area so less fiddly bits. It would not harm to get a couple of other quotes to compare.

Looks like that’s the best way to go. I guess I just wanted to save some time with everything that’s going on at the moment.
