You may want to reconsider keeping curtains as well as the shutters, as they don't keep out all the light, particularly as you said the room is bright & south facing. Especially in the summertime when it gets lighter so much earlier. From someone who's been awake since 5am because of this problem! Note to self: must get round to choosing curtains! Also, F&B cornforth white is very pale. We've used it on the interior of our windows, but I think it would be a little boring if we used it on the walls, too close to white, especially in a room as bright as yours. A friend with very good taste recommended Little Greene's French Greys. It's a lovely warm grey & there are several different tones. Don't be scared of even the darkest one as even that isn't too strong on the walls! Our master bedroom used to be at the south facing front of a 30's house too, but after rebuilding we're now at the back of the house. Although I love looking out over the garden, I do miss that glorious sunshine you get! (Although not at 5 in the morning!). Have fun deciding, and remember you can always repaint if you really hate anything!

Now that my kids are growing up and privacy is hard to find, my bedroom has become my sanctuary. Decorated in soft greys and white, I keep it super tidy and feel restful as soon as I walk in the room!

In answer to your question, this is somewhere we're planning on staying 'for life' so with a toddler and another one planned in the very near future we just thought it would be more practical to end-up with a large master with ensuite, good sized second bedroom and two smaller doubles - one each for the children and a guest room. I know it all boils down to individual circumstances, hence the above but it's otherwise a large property (nearly 2000 sq ft) in a lovely plot and area so the only real compromise seems the missing fourth bedroom.

If you intend staying here for a decade then you should make this house work for you and not the next people. I think that since you have already flagged extending in 10 years you should also future proof your plans now. If it were me I would have a bedroom where the current big bathroom is in order to give you the possibility of later extending over the ground floor extension. I would also want a super sized bathroom for my use - I have always believe the person paying the mortgage should have a better bathroom than people who visit three times a year. And I would take the view that when a loft bedroom is later added it won’t matter if one of the four bedrooms is compact. So I offer an alternative.
