Making a rust coloured chesterfield look modern

I have a rust coloured, much loved and recently reupholstered chesterfield. I have moved from a period house into an ultra modern eco home. How can I decorate in a modern way to suit the house and make the chesterfield an accent piece?

I have always lived in period properties, reflecting that in the decor. I would like to be bold, warm and fun. Also I need another two seater sofa and some other chairs.. We entertain a lot. I am not keen on grey. I know it's popular but it's everywhere and, to me, dull. I need a warm and vibrant environment that will make me happy every time I walk into the room. Also we have literally just moved so the living room is full of old furniture that won't stay as well as temp makeshift work tables and cardboard boxes. Try to see past all of that!

I agree with Genevieve, convertible, good quality baby furniture is money well spent too. There are decals as well that are very modern and transitional. Anything nature-related is also timeless and can be used for years so pick your colours from nature.

It is not clear if you have bought the property or how long you intend to stay there however I agree with the mirrored wardrobes. iKEA do some very reasonable ones which can be reassembled elsewhere if need be.. It looks like there may already be roller blinds to match the curtains...? If money is tight (given that a decent bed could cost the best part of £1,000) you could just lose the draped pelmets. If you are renting you may need to replace them when you leave. I think the whole room should be painted a neutral very pale shade which tones with the curtains and above all you must lose that awful carpet. For budget sake I suggest a pale white grained or lime-washed laminate which can in fact be laid straight over carpet and this will aid sound insulation. You can get the 'click' variety which is a bit more expensive but it can be reused. Any spare money can be spent on bedside cabinets, a large picture above the bed (?), a small dressing table (?), a small chair (?), wonderful bedding, a throw and some cushions to bring the whole look together. i would leave the chandelier (unless you hate it) as they are quite popular at present and you will have the additional expense of an electrician if you change it. Plenty room for a dining end/area in your room. Suggest a rug in the lounge section -same length as the sofa- to help define and separate each part of the room. Also makes for a cosy look and feel. Currently you have a roman blind in the lounge area and this is the best treatment for that window- suggest some colour and pattern to the fabric in a new blind, coordinating with the rug. The photo suggests floor length curtains in the dining area? Is there patio doors behind? If so again new curtains would be best option - full length and with colour and pattern as in lounge. Look at Prestigious Textiles fabric ranges for ideas. I suggest floor lamps in the lounge and a couple if small side tables rather than a coffee table. Try Dwell for side tables to match with your dining table i.e. gloss white- this will pull the two areas of the room together whilst keeping them as distinct spaces. Doing this will make the room seem bigger actually.

hi Neverforever, I think you really need to repair the entire side of the house- looking at the photos you provided, the entire side of the house look as though you have a number of spalled bricks,which have suffered from frost damage. whatever you decide as a finish , you should address these in the final decision to protect your home. I think that the amount of space lost at the side cladding the house in timber , would not lose a lot of space in the driveway. you have pipes at the side protruding at low level. Can you advise on the width of the space between the two houses. you own half of this width and have a right of way over the neighbouring house for driving your car, so this shouldn't really cause issues with the neighbour. A timber clad would provide a modern update to the look of the porch, whilst the render and paint would be a simpler update. you might want to look at external insulation and a render finish to the entire house. This is something the government is looking to push for improving the energy use of the housing stock in the uk. best Rowland

A bit of industrial, a bit victorian? (ok, that sounds a bit steampunk)

Charcoal/steel, bronze/gold, wool, dark green or navy/petrol, lots of warm woods. Statement wallpaper (photoprint?), paneling perhaps, (faux) fireplace, reclaimed floorboards, floor to ceiling drapes.

Go eclectic, mix old and new, as long as you feel at ease.

And create an ideabook on here, there are a ton of great photos. I just added some here, not knowing what your style is.

For me I think the challenge of very new properties is that they tend to have none of the architectural details you are used to in an old house such as coving, panel doors, fireplace, architrave around windows etc. Plus builders tend to decorate in very pale colours.

So the solution is the add color texture and pattern. Consider a textured wallpaper that looks like linen or woven grass or similar. Add a thick rug, cozy curtains and of course it’s possible to source these in an ecological way perhaps by repurposing things other people have finished with for a bohemian look. I also love oversized house plants.

As far as extra seating goes I also like the mid century idea and two slipper chairs is in my opinion a great way to compliment an existing sofa providing versatile seating and lots of flexibility. If you choose something in a similar fabric or buttoned this will help tie it in with the rust coloured Chesterfield
