Loft conversion?

Is it possible to add a loft conversion without moving the stairs from the middle of the house?

Hi Chris Martin, First of all if your property does not fall within a Conservation Area or is Listed, then you are allowed to build a loft Conversion and an outrigger similar to your adjoining neighbour on the right hand side provided that the volume of the proposed outrigger and the Existing Loft with a dormer roof do not exceed 40.00 cubic metres to falls under ' Permitted Development ' where Planning Permission is not required. I have done several of such projects to confirm that you will not require Planning Approval as such. However you will have to modify the staircase from first Floor Landing to First Floor if you want the finish floor level of the Outrigger to be at the same level as that of the Finish Floor level of the Existing Loft. I was one of the original poster. Eventually in our case, building control wouldn't allow this - they originally OKd the plans, but then wouldn't allow the removal of the ceiling from the box room. There was a "galleries" approval that we explored but they weren't having that either.

Hi all. Thanks for the advice. Actually, hopefully a little bit of a win win on this. My contractor is going to lower the ceilings and we should be able to grab an extra 10cm. I’m also living in a loft room at the moment which is around the 2.25 mark, so my new space should be about the same as that in the end, which has never felt cramped at all. I did a little bit of extra research and did find that the average is often only around 2.1 so probably lucky to get it as high as I am. Oddly i think it is a perceptual thing as well. I went round to a friends town house recently and 2.25 on their top floor felt very low - yet the same size in a loft conversion feels perfectly normal
