Fireplaces Living Rooms

Fireplace needs updating

Not sure what to do with this fireplace. There is a window to right. Wondering whether to rip out the beam and open it all up then maybe clad the brick fireplace in brick slips. Any ideas greatly appreciated.

I think the wooden beam is rather lovely but the brick fireplace is dated. It’s the sort of thing that was added in the 1980s to many houses. Would you consider removing the brick fireplace?

Dewpot, I had a go at painting your kitchen with the Dulux app... see the results below. You can give it a try yourself at: https://www.dulux.co.uk/web/visualizer/ For the opposite wall, you can go easy or complicated. Easy, just get some picture ledges, some of those great black&white pics like you have in the living room - sweet! http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/50152595/ Or mix some prints with your photos, etc.http://www.houzz.com/projects/52249/village-apartment-nyc Or go for some 'snake' shelving. You can make it as long as you want; have slim bottles, some spices jars and photos there too. Complicated: get someone in to make a radiator cover that doest just cover the radiator, but extends to the other end. Use the top of that as a shelf and add another shelf on top. Hi. I agree with angieav, but I think you need to tell us how you use the space so we can help with the best layout. Do you use the dining table every day or do you eat in the kitchen? Does the electronic piano get used a lot? Is the woodburner for heat, looks, you've always wanted one, or just because you think you need a focal point for the room? Is there a restriction on where it would be (do you have a second storey above some of that room)? That said, I would make the sloping wall the focal point with built in shelves, including a slot for the TV, and have it in a contrasting colour with books and nice decorative items. Because it is angled, you can then see the TV from much of the room without it being a big feature. You could have a couch square on to the entrance to the room, maybe an L with the short end against the wall where the TV currently is, a chair or two between the two windows and where the other couch is at the moment, but without sticking out so much (it looks like that couch blocks the traffic to the kitchen, but it might just be the angle of the photos). A dining table can go where you currently have yours, but I would flip it around so that it is long in that space and that is a dedicated dining area. Or have a round one that extends so for everyday it isn't encroaching on the space and traffic to the kitchen. The piano can go over near the door to the outside. A woodburner could be installed where you currently have your TV (as long as the flue has somewhere to go!). With this layout, the seating will be facing the woodburner and the TV. If you don't use the dining table much, you could put it over on the carpeted area, as someone else suggested, and dedicate the part that currently has tiles to the lounge (and then we can rethink the layout of that area). As for the flooring, I would go with what you have in the kitchen so that it flows. I hope that helps to get you started.

You have used grey as a neutral, and it is a backdrop for your co-ordinating black and white photos. It is perfectly fine to stick to this neutral palette without adding any colour, but if you do want to add colour, then the brighter the better. A mustard yellow, an acid green, a raspberry pink or a plum would look good, as would a strong teal. If you want to use primary colours then use them sparingly to avoid it looking like a child's playroom! Perhaps have the print and then pick up one if the colours in a few accessories, but don't go overboard with it. Primary colours can be very jarring to the eye.

The mock Tudor look is only applied to the front. Leaded dg units are only on this face too. Would it work if we just rendered the first floor and gable and leave the ground floor and other elevations as brick? Are we saddling ourselves with endless repaints on the render? I'm also wondering if the present fashion for render will go the way of the fake stone that appeared in the 80s or 90s when people discover the cost of upkeep? But perhaps that's another thread!

You could have the space plastered and painted, then add an electric faux wood burner or biofuel stove. I can’t recommend a wood burner due to the pollutants it emits but lots of people have them. Something simple like this?
