Need advice updating my 1930's hall and landing

Hi guys. I don't know whether to paint/stain the original pine doors, we had them dipped over 20 years ago and although a nice colour they now feel dated. Any help on what to keep and what to change would be much appreciated. Hope the photos help. Kind regards

The stairs look nice so I'd keep them as they are. However if you feel as though the doors are dated it might be the colour so perhaps refresh them with paint.
The dado rail needs to go and definitely the wallpaper under it.

You have some great features there. I love the bullseye architrave and panelled doors.

If I was lucky enough to have a hallway like yours, I'd be getting a skip for the dado rail and wallpaper (as already suggested). The dark brown carpet would also go in.

I'd then be wanting to use white emulsion on the doors and walls. To add some interest, how about creating a feature using either a coloured chandelier or mirror? How about a stripe carpet going up the stairs?

hi all, update is I have finally found a photo of someones stairs done in Brintons timorous beastie yellow Ruskin butterfly and its made me decide we are definitely 100% going for this as I love it (see attached pics) on stairs and landing... Floor in hall will be oak herringbone parquet, just wall colour to decide and we have bought new tall skirting so colour to paint this also? i have attcahed apic of the hall currently so you can see our front door with stain glass.. As Ive mentioned before the banister and spindles will be replaces with square spindles with an oak top banister and oak end cap - similar to this houzz pic ... So just to deicide on wall colour and new skirting colour... I really like f&b light blue in a hall with oak parquet but I don't feel this will go with the carpet... Kitchen and dining room will be one of the sage shades and lounge Wimborne white and downpipe...

It looks like I may need to repaint my stairs, banisters and spindles etc as the knotting is starting to show through. Big job which I could do without but I was thinking of taking the opportunity to do something a little more contemporary. Does anyone have any tips? In the entryway/hallway/stairs wall I was thinking of painting the walls shaded white by farrow and ball. I wanted to use a feature colour or wallpaper on the landing upstairs. I plan on using Purbeck stone in the bedroom off the landing so something which compliments this would be good. so to sum up...1. Complimenting colours for my banisters to give a classic contemporary scheme to go with shaded white and Purbeck stone. 2. A feature colour for my landing... I can post a pic if anyone is interested.

Agree with GD11 - a warm white or grey will work well all year. As you have a porch in front of the door that is limiting light coming in and especially in winter you will find some greens and blue very depressing. I would also ditch the stair gates. We had one for the first child and he kept playing with it, so we just taught him not to go near the stairs and he learned to bump, or more normally slide down the stairs. never bothered with a gate at all for my other kids. How nice is it not to have to open and close a gate every time you need to go up and down the stairs? It is only the illusion of safety.

As you can see I have taken your advice. Dado rail and paper gone! Ceilings skimmed and making a start on walls. Hope to post updates. Thanks again for taking the time to post, it has been gratefully received.
