Kitchen Layout Help!

We are just starting a kitchen extension, and am a bit overwhelmed about choices for kitchen layout.

The new kitchen will knock through into the old, existing kitchen so i'm trying to work out how to;

a) keep a nice flow

b) consider what appliances we might need to include? and if we need drawers. Designer didn't add any.

c) How to get the cabinets to tie nicely into the ceiling line.

d) what to do with the corder by the window (where the clock is o this design)

e) Use the desk space without having the drawers each side as it's not that wide.

f) I love the look of breakfast pantrys that sit on the worksurface but can't see how we would make these fit.

Ignore colours - thinking white quartz worktop and light grey/navy cabinets.

Basically hoping for any and all ideas/inspiration/feedback as to how we make this space 'work'

I think you need to get a decent independant kitchen designer involved before any works is started to work with you and your wishlist and work from the architects plan. Your local sheds and builders merchants are very limited in what they can offer, (might be lots of colours and fancy bits etc but limited in door and cabinet size options).

Looking quickly through your listing and i'd say

appliances, you need to start looking at these so your designer can fit them in your kitchen, add what you need to your wish list, but a 600 wide hob may well be to small if you like cooking, possibly move to island and have a downdraught extractor ducted out before any concrete/floor goes down

you can't have to many drawers but drawers do start to bump the price up

extra tall units to go close to the ceiling then have a head infill (about 50-100mm) to fill the gap and then it won't collect dust

in the corner, i think if this is in the extension, then the window may be to close to the corner, would need to see measurements. possibly would run wall units here

would need more wall space to fit a breakfast pantry unit in the kitchen (plenty of space eleswhere though)

You have a really lovely large space. I agree with Lifestyle Kitchens that your design would benefit from an independent designer, or at least thought through by another supplier to spur ideas. From my perspective....

Flow: Consider the spacing between your sink and hob... I think yours will feel quite cramped when in use. (Imagine a spoon rest, chopping board/ prep area, dirty dishes, etc). If you want to keep both on the outer wall, and think you’ll prep on the island, I would consider putting in a small prep sink. That will also help you interact with any kitchen guests, instead of always having your back turned to them.

Where do you plan to keep your dry goods? It appears all your pantry space is in the adjacent room. Perhaps one of the 3 oven towers could be be repurposed?

Appliances: The 60cm hob does seem small/imbalanced for the overall space. You might not “need” anything bigger, but a slightly larger hob will be more comfortable for any multi-pot meals.

The Clock space.... 2 floating shelves for cookbooks and/or display items and plants would look nice.

Drawers: The design does seem to be missing obvious shallow drawer space for your cutlery, knives, cooking utensils, foil & clingfilm etc.

Concept designers.... We used Karen at https://www.oneplan-design.co.uk/ early on in our kitchen remodel design thinking. It was money really well spent, and I learned so much.

Thank you all for the advice and suggestions so far. I've incorporated lots into an updated plan attached. This one is pencil to show more measurements. Things I've changed based on your feedback are: 1) Moving hob to other end of island to keep cooking area all in the same space. 2) Binned the American fridge in favour of separate integrated fridge and freezer 3) Centred the sink into the middle of the base units 4) Put a dish drainer above the sink to keep countertop free (seen on other discussions) 5) Moved island seating to opposite end to view garden. This is going to be our house for the next 15 years or more so think this would bother me if it wasn't. 6) Widened the island to 1200mm and shortened it to 2700mm. Doing this and moving the island 100mm closer to the side wall gives around 1200mm clearance to the 'chunk' structural wall that can't move. I love the idea of a tall cupboard being a breakfast cupboard as @pjdklm suggests to house, cereals, bread, toaster maybe even microwave. 600mm is probably too small so I could reduce the sink or base units by 200mm to make an 800mm cupboard between the fridge and freezer. Does this sound better? The sink run then would be 3000mm which matches the rooflights. @rinked and @Jonathan thanks for your suggestions and I like the simplicity of the latest design form rinked. However I'm not bothered about distance to washing machines from upstairs as if I'm using the back door, the first thing I'm doing is putting the kettle on. I also want to have the large back room and so don't need as much room for the study or hallway from front door. I take your points about the rooflight above the dining table but with pendants above the island, I'm not sure if I want anything else hanging down from the ceiling. Plus I guess we can always use candles and lamps etc and then we can look up at the night sky. We also have an east facing garden, so have great morning sunshine but if the rooflights were as close to the first floor (as in rinked's designs) they would be in shade by about 1 or 2pm.

Hi Dave, What a lot of doors but not a problem. I would keep the walkway between the doors clear if you do decide to go for an island but there might not be space. I would put your tall storage on the long wall because this will be out of the way of people walking through to the garden. If you're able to make the hallway door slightly narrower to get the 600mm width on the currently 550mm door then thats fabulous, if not, you could go for a breakfront (set back the first cupboard then pull out out the centre ones) or go for a freestanding tall block. All depends on the look you're going for. Then I would put a seating area by the window and use the rest for prep space, sink and hob. Fabulous ideas from both Amuri Interiors and Interior Workings. I agree having a pot filler and stove on the island is so much more convenient especially when you want to avoid moving around too much (which can sometimes get a bit messy too). Depending on budget, I would recommend getting a more powerful (and less noisy) extractor fan for the island. With this change, the original stove location can be additional counter top space for use especially when putting things in / taking things out of the adjacent oven / grill / microwave.

Hello everyone. Have been trying to think of different ideas on how to make the downstairs of our house (we're in a townhouse) a more sociable space. Unsure of whether to just redesign our kitchen or start knocking walls through to open it all up. Would appreciate some fresh eyes to see if there are any options we haven't thought of!
