Kitchen Layout Conundrum

Hi all - we are gutting out our existing kitchen and have had a couple of mock ups sent across. The most recent layout is more of a U shape but a smaller square island which we aren't fans of. The island is meant to be our 'statement' factor.

We were thinking of leaving the back wall empty and lengthening out the island. Hard to move the sink etc because that's where existing plumbing is.

Any innovative ideas on what else we can do to extend the island, maintain a double oven, separate fridge and freezer, storage space etc? The bottom image is what we are more keen on with a larger island,,,

I've recently designed a kitchen very similar to your room and they wanted a feature island too, I've attached the images for you to get some ideas for your new space.
By going for the L shape with island, rather than U with island, you gain that extra width and everything is to hand so no getting your 10k steps cooking supper.

If you remove the back wall, you'll get a very long kitchen which may feel a bit odd and you'd have to plan the layout very carefully to make sure you're not always looking for something on the other side of the island!

I like where the Wren design is going, the hob needs a rethink though! What didn't you like about it?

Thank you for your comments! Super useful. We do not want the hob to be on the island so that's where we are looking at keeping it where it is. To be honest, we quite like the Wren design - another thing we weren't sure on was the colours. We definitely like a contrast and were thinking grey on the outside with navy blue as the island.

Are there any other colour contrasts that work in your opinion? We are looking at the Fairford range by Howdens and our kitchen lets a lot of light in which is great

Hello Tim, Two things I would suggest which I think would make for a lovely space.. Consider opening the wall between the two living area... With sliding or wooden french doors it means the two living rooms can be decorated as one huge space.. If the desire arose to close off one of the rooms these, are a gr8 option as it give you the freedom to have both open and individual spaces.. What this does is give you a full view of the entire (almost) ground floor.. Then consider double french doors to the rear with a galley run.. Island can morph into dining with a cantilever style dining table.. The idea being that this function transitions seamlessly into dining giving you more space.. So a play area could be situated near the seating/dining section, which would be good if you spent a lot of time in this area of the house.. For design and procurement suggestions at a more affordable day rate. I design and specify the full kitchen with all appliances and scheme... thus giving a complete service.. This image can be adapted to work according to the space and current positioning of the dining table to make use of the space opposite a galley run. I would also situate fridge freezer together at the start of the run so it is not the dominating feature you see at the end of the room... So ideally placement in corner at the start of the run pantry end. : ))

If they're separate rooms I think they can differ the same as any other room in the house as long as it's a cohesive look. You could always go for the same cabinets but different complementary colours. You may also want a different flooring for the utility if it's likely to get very dirty and wet. You might also consider a different and cheaper worktop for the utility if you don't need to consider stains or heat resistance for example. i think either or Is fine though :)

A picture would help get an idea of what we are working with. But have you consider a more 'funky' glass backsplash. We use a company called Deco Glaze and they have a range called 'Deco Kiln' - see attached image, whihc is textured and they also brick tiles, slate strip effects. Might be worth a look. Thank you Jonathon! lots of food for thought there! i am hoping to keep the utility etc on the left hand side if possible to allow the windows to remain in the open plan living dining but maybe we could do a version of that flipped.

As long as the colours your choose are both hot (red undertones) or both cool (blue undertones), they'll generally all look great. Go for it and have fun, it's your kitchen!
