The overall colour of your fireplace made me think of a Little Greene paint colour called Middle Buff. Their website gives some nice options of complimentary colours and even complimentary wallpaper - so might be a good place to start. https://www.littlegreene.com/middle-buff

Farrow and Ball do a similar kind of thing - so just look up a colour similar to the fireplace and it will give ideas for colour schemes.

I think painting the wooden fire surround white will help it blend better with the room. I think walls in a taupe similar to your sofa would also soften everything. Purbeck Stone by F&B is a lovely shade but there are many others to choose from. The footstool and cushions will add a bit of colour too.

What about a teal wall? Teal and mustard seems to be a popular combination, and the darker wall would really make the fireplace pop.

Or navy would also be dramatic, and bring out the beauty of the fireplace.

Thanks Holly, I’ve thought about teal and agree it’s a good combo. I’m just not that bold with strong colours and err towards a more neutral palette on the walls. I could def try some real soft furnishings though.

I love what you have in your room and would 100% keep the fireplace as it is. Skiming Stone is gorgeous. An alternative is Joanna by LIttle Greene (a pale taupe) or Hammock. I would try all three.

Hi there HU ! On a colour wheel, the opposite to yellow/mustard colours gives you a shade between cobalt blue and violet. So the suggestions of teal might work, or possibly even a violet/lilac shade on the chimney breast to make both colours zing ?!? You could then decide whether the wooden surround would look better as it is, or would benefit from going white (to match the internal window shutters). Others have suggested neutral tones with a hint of lilac, so that would work well on the rest of the walls. (From the photo, it looks as though the walls are a pale grey, which is inoffensive, but unexciting in this context.) You could then be very brave with sofa cushions: have one or two in each colour - the gold, the mustard, the woodwork, the walls ... I look forward to seeing the finihsed result !

I agree with those saying teal - as soon as I saw the room that was my instant thought, just up to the picture rail. Teal really works will with the golden tones in the fireplace. Be bold, it's your house, if your not looking to sell in the near future why limit yourself to neutral tones? Get some lining paper and a sample pot and paint a large area and hang it up so you can live with it for a while and move it to different walls before committing. It's a beautiful room. Look forward to seeing what you decide.

Keep the fireplace as it is, imagine it's lovely old oak and the tiles are a stunning colour. I agree that a blue would work. Personally don't like dark blues or teal on walls but that's personal taste. The other option is to go for shades or orange which would be lightened by the sofa and existing floor coverings.
