Help with TV position

Our living room has a fireplace which is to one side. The chimney breast is huge and has an alcove in the other side. At the moment we have the TV in the alcove, but it is too low. We need some advice on where to put it. We can't move the fireplace because we had a new wooden floor fitted around it. Should the TV go above the fireplace? or high up above the alcove? Or half above the alcove and half filling it? I am not even sure whether if we put the TV on the wall it should be lined up with the alcove or in the centre of the wall? We could block up the alcove? Although we have sat box and dvd player in alcove. Help much appreciated!

It does look a bit odd doesn’t it? If it were mine I would move the fire surround to the middle and block up the open bit. Is there a gas fire within the fireplace? I would also paint the whole wall to make it more cohesive. A mirror above the fireplace would also look nice. Could the tv go on a unit, say, on the right of the fireplace?

Somewhere along these lines: A custom fitted mdf box (on rollers if you like) that goes in the bottom part of the alcove. TV bracket and plugs mounted at the top of the alcove, then closed off.

I replied yesterday but can't see it now?! Funnily enough the electricians did suggest building a false wall where the cabling could be hidden (& have limitless options) but we decided against that & the wiring is now chiselled into the wall. I think something bespoke is probably the way forward because I'd prefer not to have anything too chunky at low level eating up sofa space. I did try to speak to the builder/carpenter yesterday about it but didn't in the end because I got the impression he doesn't want any extra jobs to delay the build. It's that time of the build where many decisions have to be made...am feeling the pressure!! Really appreciate everyone's help :)

Hi guys, thanks for the replies. Impressive memory Jonathan, but yes the plans have of course changed. The room above is now going and it will be a vaulted double height living space! I think your picture of the tv by the side of the fireplace might have to be the approach, but perhaps on the extended fireplace and angled into the room rather than wall mounted. The opposing windows are south facing so the sun moves across the sky directly outside for most of the day, it is probably high enough to not shine directly on the tv opposite but will make the windows a bright reflection!

If you can't move the fire because of the flooring, I'd change the decor so the feature wall paper wasn't on that wall because it draws attention to the slightly strange arrangement. If that wall were neutral the fireplace wouldn't stand out so much. I would definitely then put the tv in the alcove, centrally either on the wall or a suitable height unit. And have a big picture or mirror in the other alcove to balance it out.
