TV & air con housing help

Hi
I am looking at the family area of our extension & considering how to house the air conditioning unit we are having that will be positioned above the wall mounted TV. The plan is to conceal it & open the cupboard when in use (approved by the air conditioning company). I've seen these options in IKEA & John Lewis but wondered if anyone has any other ideas? I'm conscious we only have 2.3m from the wall to door so whatever we put on the tv wall will eat into the sofa space available. I was wondering about putting shelves on the wall with a shallow unit above - pic in next post. What would you recommend?

Thanks so much everyone, it's been great to read the ideas. Eletyadams - what a fantastic unit - this is the sort of style I love and think would fit in with the decor and style of the property. I wonder whether it would work in a soft white to match the dado and not clash with the oak flooring? Firtreecottage - I agree something not fixed would be better. Thanks for all the suggestions everyone. I will have to check out the Ikea one in more detail, I didn't realise they did pieces like this.... and also think about if my marriage would last after the assembly! Claire the work you had done with the MDF looks really good, this might work for us and then we can get exactly what we are looking for. MBH carpentry the work looks great with lovely finish.

I think a shelf would tie in nicely with the shelves you already have in the alcove, but a tv cabinet isn’t such a terrible thing. You can get some lovely wooden tv units, painted or natural, which will look fine. However a shelf would be far cheaper! Just one bit of advice, don’t get a glass one as it really shows up the dust, even an hour after dusting it, it will need dusting again. Wood is much more forgiving. Here’s a few ideas. 7

Thanks everyone. I think we are going to extend the hallway into the utility as this is the cheapest option and the utility needs doing anyway. We are going to remove some of the cupboards, so that the pushchair can go in the space created and move the sofa to block the playroom door... then we can test it out for a few weeks. I've reorganised the kitchen cupboards, moved the microwave and the plates etc and its made a big difference already to how the kitchen feels. Feeling positive :)

Hi LTS. Just thinking whether sliding doors would be better rather than a swing open door? These are the Dalia and bianca from trendy products. The second one also comes in walnut. I think ikea also does similar. Would need wall dimensions plus air con dimensions though. It may however be a case of ringing companies for the actual shelf dimensions though

Hi Minnie thanks for that...it does look lovely but I guess you wouldn't be able to watch TV at the same time as having air conditioning blowing? That would be a shame.
The air con unit dimensions are H290 W1050 D250 & the wall is W3.7m x H2.1m

No, you wouldn't with those particular ones but will see if I can find one where you can! Just thinking if you went for the shelf idea instead. I like the design of the first one where the air con unit would be off centre. Assuming the tv is to scale the dimensions on this pic look to be pretty much identical with the space between air con and tv. It may not cost much more to add wood panelling (or some other type of cladding, paint etc) and then go bespoke for a wall to wall unit shelf beneath plus the cupboard for the air con?

I personally wouldn't bother boxing it in or putting shelves around it in order to disguise it. I have an air con unit in the living room and it needs regular dusting and vacuuming. As well as an annual service. So it needs to be easily accessible for this. I wouldn't say it was quiet either, not as loud as an extractor fan, but the kids do turn up the volume when it is on. The outside unit is huge and there is no way to disguise that on the wall. I have missed mine during this heatwave, as it has been taken down for the house to be rendered.

Thanks minnie I was looking at shallow kitchen cupboards yesterday as I was thinking of creating something similar to what you've suggested. I guess the beauty of buying something off the shelf is that you don't have to think/worry what design/layout. Have just been looking around a local-ish departments store for inspiration but there wasn't anything.

Hi Hoi I've missed my old air con too as it was removed whilst the building work is on going. It was a powerful 10kw unit but we are replacing it with 7kw.

I must admit I'm struggling to find a wall unit to fit the air con, I will persist though! I don't suppose you fancy a ceiling fan instead?! If not the JL or Ikea Ones could work or similar as long as they don't need the cupboard dividers to support the top shelf as you don't want it bowing

With the IKEA or John Lewis ones, the carpenter would take a look to see if any additional support would be needed. At least I have an option f I can't find anything else. Thanks for your help, Minnie :)

If you're using a carpenter it may be easier to go bespoke for the aircon unit? Every unit I've found seems to be 0.5cm out! Alternatively as you're building anyway you could recess the unit within a fake beam and then add a decorative grill. I can't find an exact pic but merge the 3 pics to get an idea! You can then choose whatever you want for the tv unit? You may also find something on jali, I can't get the customise option to work but a shaker style may tie in? Or you might find something else on there you like. I ordered a bookcase for my old house from there but they do take a while to put together (for us anyway!)

Hi,

I agree with and like Minnies final solution!

You could either build a false wall and create niches to hold the TV / air con unit / additional shelving to hold books/ decorative items/ etc. However this could make the room look shorter and eat up space. The above idea, therfore seems more effective as it doesn't take up floor space and yet creatively integrates the unit.

Alternatively, if you have a joiner at hand, I'd get him to make bespoke units instead of purchasing...much of the shelving and units in our latest renovation was bespoke made by the joiner which proved to be highly effective as we were unable to find units which correctly fit the space.

I replied yesterday but can't see it now?!

Funnily enough the electricians did suggest building a false wall where the cabling could be hidden (& have limitless options) but we decided against that & the wiring is now chiselled into the wall.

I think something bespoke is probably the way forward because I'd prefer not to have anything too chunky at low level eating up sofa space. I did try to speak to the builder/carpenter yesterday about it but didn't in the end because I got the impression he doesn't want any extra jobs to delay the build.

It's that time of the build where many decisions have to be made...am feeling the pressure!! Really appreciate everyone's help :)
