I'm struggling to like a splashback in my new kitchen (even though I chose it) so was looking for inspiration - my partner just doesn't get it and will probably leave me if I even dare to mention changing it :-)

You are all amazing! This is really helping our thinking process. We have considered banquette seating and certainly a bench, at times we might need to squash family around the table. Thinking extra storage underneath it. The peninsula isn't feeling so bad, Minnie the pictures are great. Like the shelving in the corner and can still have a run of tall cupboards. Manabout, wondering if the island is going to look too big in the center. Feel a bit scared a repeating my friend's mistake! The room that is going to be the kitchen has to have walls removed to make one room but i can plot this out in the first floor living room, newspaper on the floor, just to try it out. Worrying a little about the table position, how that would feel if it isn't centered on the doors. I am quite 'symmetrical' and 'matchy matchy' when I organize and plan. Finding the new eclectic styling (which I do love) a bit of a struggle! Consensus is definitely the 'kitchen' in that end of the room, rather than the bigger space currently planned for dining?

A 20mm gap is far to much to have as the upstands are only 20mm thick, if the fitters tried to fit the upstands to the walls then it would slip down the back. The overhang of the worktop to the front of the cabinets, depending on the depth of the cabinets, should be between 30-40mm all round, be worthwhile checking this out. When you say the tap doesn't fit easily, is it that the hole is to small (35mm) or does the tap hit the upstand. I assume the kitchen (base units at least) were all in place and fitted before templating and haven't moved between template and worktop installation. I think the fitters have tried to make the best out of a bad job and something went wrong in either templating or fabrication. Your supplier should still have the physical templates so I'd definitely go back to them. There's always a bit of filling to be done between the upstands and the wall with decorators caulk as no wall is flat and upstands don't bend. Modern dob and dab walls are some of the worst i've seen. Hopefully its decorators caulk and not silicon thats been used.

Hi Teenytinyhouse (what a great name!) - Yes in your first example (with the diagonal corner wall unit) you need another unit to finish the run and you might perhaps consider a 150mm wide open 'pigeon hole' wall unit or even a 150mm wall unit with pull out mechanism? Although I personally think the diagonal corner wall is fighting with the base unit L-Shape so perhaps a standard corner wall design (as above) is the better option? Good luck :)
