Kitchen Plan help - Please

Hello to all,

I am here looking for some advice and views on kitchen layouts and schemes,

We are about to have a new extension built which is 10Mtr x 5.1Mtr and part of this will see a new kitchen being installed.

We can't decide, and have about as much interior design knowledge as a slug!

Here are some plans we have had done and i like them all for their own styles, What would you do

We are happy to change the room layouts completely., floor plan attached.

I think they all look pretty nice and very exiting for you. From my experience make sure you have enough seats and space on the island or peninsula and work out who would be sitting there most. I say this as you have cooking and a sink on the island- so with young kids I would be less keen on cooking, and if it’s guests then I wouldn’t really literally to be cleaning my dirty dishes in front of them. Personal choice and maybe just me. Therefore I like the design with the sink at the window but I would loose the high level storage units on the sink wall and leave it more open. Enjoy hope the build is going well.

You have quite a few different options there.
I like the ones where you have low cupboards on the outside wall as well as the full bank of high cupboards. You’ll have plenty of storage then.
But I would lose the high cupboards on that wall and move both the sink and the hob to there, leaving the island clear. The larger picture window is better on that wall than the actual window design.
I’d consider sliding doors in the lounge area then - as large an opening as you can manage.

Hi. I mean the wall with the utility door. I see where you are going with the symmetry for the wall with the aga, but I would make that tall end unit a pantry or place for serving plates, etc. and have the integrated fridge where you currently have the wood upper cabinet. I've been looking at your Ideabook and reading the aga discussion (I'm way behind minnie!) and I see what you are trying to achieve. But none of them have the same layout. When the feature aga corbel wall exists, it doesn't have an induction hob right next to it or it doesn't have a solid wall at the end (one of them is amazing with their deep cupboards either side but there is nowhere to put anything!). Do you have roof lights over the kitchen? Unless you have a giant lantern skylight and lots of under-cabinet lighting planned, please don't have black countertops. Apart from the fact that none of the kitchens in your Ideabook have dark counters, I come from a place of experience. I used to have a massive, terribly planned, kitchen with lovely black granite counters. Not only could only one person work in it even though it was the size of a dance floor, but the lights had to be on all the time and it was really depressing. And as there will be a dining table nearby to take in your beautiful garden, the island perches will be there to keep the cook(s) company, so facing in on the kitchen is perfect.

Regarding Ikea also bear in mind that if their doors are non standard then in a few years time if you want to swap them you won’t get standard size doors to fit. I would look for an alternative supplier that supplies standard size carcases and doors to cater for long term plans. Many suppliers are no more expensive than Ikea, it’s just a case of shopping around. Look at independent small businesses as they are no more expensive generally and offer a one to one service.

Keiblum's suggestion saves an extension and could be built on. if the play space is no longer needed then that means the room uses can return to living, kitchen and dining. my thoughts run to keeping the doors to the patio bbq area, run the kitchen down that wall (and honestly I don't know how long or how many cabinets that could be), use your Ikea island and see if any you could make use of the under stair area for utility area (something like a European laundry) or maybe the fridge ? The fridge might be better in the cabinet run though. Add another set of doors where the kitchen sink once overlooked the garden and use this area as your dining. You might even find yiu have space for more informal seating. In doing this you will be able to connect your bbq area to the kitchen and find yourself using this area as an outdoor dining room, giving rise to possibilities of further development of this space to use rather than it be a walk through. Another thought is if the layout was swapped as described you might be able to explore gaining more outlook by adding a full length window into the wall between the two sets of doors, or even removing the wall completely and glazing it to become full glass right across the rear wall, but without changing the footprint? Putting in another set of french doors might be the more reasonable option if the kitchen is swapped, but Kieblem's suggestion makes great use of the available materials .

Thank you all for the advice and suggestions so far. I've incorporated lots into an updated plan attached. This one is pencil to show more measurements. Things I've changed based on your feedback are: 1) Moving hob to other end of island to keep cooking area all in the same space. 2) Binned the American fridge in favour of separate integrated fridge and freezer 3) Centred the sink into the middle of the base units 4) Put a dish drainer above the sink to keep countertop free (seen on other discussions) 5) Moved island seating to opposite end to view garden. This is going to be our house for the next 15 years or more so think this would bother me if it wasn't. 6) Widened the island to 1200mm and shortened it to 2700mm. Doing this and moving the island 100mm closer to the side wall gives around 1200mm clearance to the 'chunk' structural wall that can't move. I love the idea of a tall cupboard being a breakfast cupboard as @pjdklm suggests to house, cereals, bread, toaster maybe even microwave. 600mm is probably too small so I could reduce the sink or base units by 200mm to make an 800mm cupboard between the fridge and freezer. Does this sound better? The sink run then would be 3000mm which matches the rooflights. @rinked and @Jonathan thanks for your suggestions and I like the simplicity of the latest design form rinked. However I'm not bothered about distance to washing machines from upstairs as if I'm using the back door, the first thing I'm doing is putting the kettle on. I also want to have the large back room and so don't need as much room for the study or hallway from front door. I take your points about the rooflight above the dining table but with pendants above the island, I'm not sure if I want anything else hanging down from the ceiling. Plus I guess we can always use candles and lamps etc and then we can look up at the night sky. We also have an east facing garden, so have great morning sunshine but if the rooflights were as close to the first floor (as in rinked's designs) they would be in shade by about 1 or 2pm.

Both are nice but I personally think a more contemporary design is the first one with the bank of units all the way across. Having said that I don’t like the position of the sink. It is too close to the edge and I sometimes think a hob and sink both in an island create clutter.

If you opt for base units along the window wall as the others have suggested ditch the wall units and perhaps add a couple of shelves instead. Difficult call.

If you lose the wall units on the exterior wall - you could run the full-height units the full length of the wall and still have the length of base units on the right. I agree with Daisy that the more contemporary look is the island with the back wall of units but it leaves you with having to put the sink & job on the island & much less countertop to work on. I always wonder where the kettle goes when I see those types of kitchens.

A quick observation on your plans, if you're planning on a 'true handleless' kitchen as in the elevations, than your plans haven't allowed for the gola handle rails.

I think I would go for the bank and the island as all the comments agree it is very contemporary. I think I would lose the worktop overhang (or reduce it) and the stools on the island. This would make cooking safer as no one would be seated there. You can still see everything going on and supervise from that cooking location. I would move the dining table and chairs/benches closer to the island and have the living area where the dining area is now. You have a large glass door so will still have a view of the garden. There is plenty of room for a single sofa against the back wall behind the dining table and with a garden view if so desired.
