What’s behind the stud wall where the gas metre is? Can it be moved there? Better still, can it be moved outside and out into a wall mounted unit?
We’ve had gas meters moved before - I think it was fairly straight forward (you have to get an official in - but will be easy to google).

Could you post the measurements please?

Two thoughts here. Yes you can have the meter moved outside by the relevant authority. Alternatively I wouldn’t worry too much about having it where it is. How often to you actually have to read the meter especially with the Smart meters these days which are supposed to send readings direct to your supplier, therefore perhaps you won’t even have to read it at all.

Thanks for the reply’s guys. I will also post dimensions up to assist. The wall to the left where the meter is is a structural wall and the other side is my hall so not really able to move that side. I’ve just blocked a door frame in. The back wall is the front of my house so i could move outside but I believe it is very expensive to be moved. I am going to get a smart meter but it is just isolation I am concerned about if needed.

It is very expensive to get a meter moved outside. Approx £1000, unless your energy provider is moving meters in your locality in which case it may be free if they do all your neighbours too. That’s what happened to us, no way would I pay that huge sum to move it!

Ended up contacting Cadent which I believe own the incoming supply for the gas. They said will be around £600 to move to the outside wall which I feel will be a little bit ugly but maybe it’s work it. Peoples thoughts or would you work around it?

Note2: ikea doesn't have 90cm cabinets, thus the filler next to the sink.. Also the gap between 12 and 16 is a corner cabinet.. Imagine 14+15+16 as one cabinet with a pull-out hood.

Hi I would move the gas meter, it’s not a big job and can be contained within a small box. If your builder excavates the ground around the pipes the quote will be cheaper.

I agree. Move the gas meter outside. I recently had mine moved out of the garage, since I'm having it converted to a home office. It cost me £612 (Wales & West) with a surface mounted box. Maybe you could have a built-in box which would look less obtrusive, but cost a bit more.

Could you cut a hole in the hallway wall and make the meter accessible from the hallway side? This way it doesn't need to go outside and there's no need for a hatch in a kitchen cabinet.

Yes, I have. Too bad they only have a few cabinet widths. At work I have an extend program, but can't hobby at work :)

Going to have to check out the ikea range I think. May work out cheaper hopefully. Appreciate all your help though

Ikea is cheaper when you're capable of placing your own kitchen. Their service is quite pricey. My niece chose to buy a Rotpunkt kitchen instead of ikea, since ikea was 'just' €300 less.

And like I said, their cabinet sizes are limited.

Regarding Ikea also bear in mind that if their doors are non standard then in a few years time if you want to swap them you won’t get standard size doors to fit. I would look for an alternative supplier that supplies standard size carcases and doors to cater for long term plans. Many suppliers are no more expensive than Ikea, it’s just a case of shopping around. Look at independent small businesses as they are no more expensive generally and offer a one to one service.

I'm no expert, but you might have problems leaving the meter where it is. It must be accessible and ventilated. I've read that your supplier or DNO may force you to move it or threaten to disconnect you if it is not easy to acess. Even smart meters need to be accessed sometimes (mine went dumb when I switched suppliers).
