Kitchen diner layout - help please!

Hi, I'm really hoping someone can help me work out what the best layout is for a kitchen diner in new downstairs extension. I feel like I'm going round in circles not able to decide.

Originally I thought we'd go for an L shape kitchen area at the back of the new space and leave the space near the bi-folds for a dining table and maybe a snug area? But now I'm wondering if we should have snug area at the back and a long run of kitchen instead of an L-shape?

Points to note

- Washing machine and dryer will be upstairs in bathroom so we don't need to allow space for that.

- I would like an island

- snug area only needs to be small! We have a separate lounge but I just want a second option for the kids to watch tv so a wall to put tv on and a small sofa?

When you have a long run of kitchen, how long does it need to be to accommodate a regular household of 4? (2 adults and 2 kids)

Hi Izzy,

for the sitting area usually 550-600mm per sit. Please ignore the shape of units - this is just for the layout

With the peninsula you can fit easily 4-5 sits

Hi there, I have a idea for the kitchen. I think your trying to pop too much in the space. And in your proposed plan, ironically your creating a less efficient kitchen as you've lost the wall space. But when the wall is down your going to have a nice generous room which will be lovely for the family. My thought is that you should stop seeing the space as two rooms. But think of it as one large dual purpose room. Think traditional large country kitchens with the cabinetry around the walls and a central large table. of course this can be in any style. This way, you can leave the door to the loo where it is. The drains can stay put and you just need to open it all up. And probably take out the fireplace...maybe :D This is my quick sketch. Extend the counter to the doorway. Then you will have a nice long run of counter. Plenty of work space. Remove the chimney and fill up that wall with all the fridge and tall n' bulky stuff. So this becomes your pantry and other storage. Then pop your large table in the centre of the room. And as a Mr J Oliver likes to say - Happy days.

Hi Sandi You have a great space to work with, and a lot of ideas for the space itself which is a great start. Ideally it would be best to sit down with a Designer and really dig into what you want from the space, taking time to really figure out how you want the space to feel as a whole. However, to get you started it's easy enough to create a concept design plan of the space from plans you have of the home, so if you'd be interested I'd be happy to take a look at the plan for both the basement and lounge, and send you something over to give an idea of how the design could look / be laid out, based upon the information you've posted above. I'm sure Karen will give you lots of options :) option 1 utility position doesn't work for me personally. I wouldn't want to be trecking through those doors etc. I don't know if an option would be to make the study a combined laundry/cloak and then extend the playroom to include a desk. If you work from home a lot though that could be an issue? Option 2, the kitchen doesn't feel big enough for the house and not sure how many tall units you're wanting? The loss of door in the play room is also tricky for hanging out washing. do you mean like an oriel window for the window seat? i don't know if i would change the window and door around? Just thinking of taking rubbish out, bbq's, al fresco dining etc so the door may be better from the kitchen?

Thanks for the replies. There is only 3 of us but we do use the dining table every day. Our current one won’t fit, so intend to buy an extending one when we move in. I did think about the under stairs cupboard, but it slopes and we need to keep school bags etc somewhere tidy! I was hoping to put the dining table in the breakfast area, the owners now have a round one in there along with a side board, so hopefully should fit. You mention you want an island - if you carry on along the lines of the architects drawings - maybe putting the sink on the island and the hob on the wall - there’s space past the sheet room for some tall units /Fridge freezer … the dung really needs to be in the side that doesn’t have full sunshine on the wall when you want to watch TV .

Ha auto correct didn’t like shower room !! And where did dung come from ?? Snug not dung !! I’m going to have a serious word with auto correct !!! Lol - it’s been a long day !!!

Hi Izzy,
We had the same dilemma when designing ours. We found a kitchen designer who helped us plan the lot and see it all in 3D totally free of charge but obviously after this service, we decided to go with him! It’s to do g the right designer in my experience, and I couldn’t recommend mine enough! All done online as well which was great with how busy we are
