I think you would benefit from hiring an interior designer who can look at all of your options and come up with something really innovative. The safe option is to go with one level, however the different levels can be fabulous for sunken seating or transitioning from an island to a table height. Also adding in the fact that the ground floor extension might not have been built to a level where it would take another floor. Ie foundations would usually be deeper etc. If you know all that already then you could make an initial enquiry with your local planning dept to discuss it with you. They don't usually charge.

Hello, It sounds like you have some great and really exciting ideas to make your home an even better fit for your family. An open plan kitchen dining room would be a great way of boosting family space and allowing the layout to feel more open and spacious. Bi fold doors looking out to the garden would be a great way of boosting light in the space - you could look at having the kitchen/dining room in the reception room looking out into the garden. Have any of your neighbours successfully had an extension? From the plan you do have space to play with, without having to extend. It may just involve making a few internal alterations and looking at what you currently have that does work and what doesn't work. There's lots of ways to maximise kitchen storage, from having drawers that you can stack fully meaning no wasted space, to tall wall units and pantry units that are specifically a food cupboard. Thank you all soo much for the feedback! I agree with regards to the many doors in the utility. The Architect proposed having a lean too to store the many pairs of running shoes my partner has, they get a bit smelly soo I don’t want them in the house at all. But I’m thinking we can put them in the garage which is what we do now and just skip the lean too. The dining area crittal doors can go as well. We currently have a gap and I wanted to keep it because the light flows through from the front to back of the house but I agree with Jonathan, we will have light in the back of the house from the skylight. I actually like the small bedroom, that’s our daughters room and we have family visiting all the time so I’d prefer to keep the small bedroom. Thank you all!
