What Size Concealed Cistern?

Concealed cisterns come in a range of heights, typically in the range 80-110cm. The shorter ones are obviously necessary if you want to box in to the height of an adjacent sink. But what are the advantages of the taller ones? Is is purely that they can be made shallower and still hold the same amount of water? Or do the provide a better flush because of the higher pressure?

If height wasn't an issue how would you choose?

Articles about choosing one all seem to concentrate on the aesthetics not the practicalities.

Just from a repair perspective, yes things do go wrong and yes the flush plate comes off for 'maintenance', however, if you get a problem such as having to replace the whole cistern box or leaks etc from such, then no you can't just stick your hand in the access hole. Thus, if you can instead of tiling over the top of the false wall, put a wooden top, or tiled removable top / stone top..............anything that can be lifted off, it will make life a lot easier for your poor repair man.

We are a funny bunch.......we all have pipes hidden behind tiles in the shower but don’t worry about them leaking but do worry about concealed cistern toilets. Then we unplug the TV when we go on holiday in case it melts but we trust the fridge. I think lots of people have an opinion based on what a tradesperson has said rather than personal experience. And let’s be fair- as a profession they tend to be a little negative.... we have all heard that flat roofs leak, concealed cisterns will give you sleepless nights and anything new and unfamiliar is bound to explode within 20 minutes of installation. I say don’t make decisions based on your trades persons convenience but have what you want and have faith that the product has been designed to allow maintenance. I had a concealed cistern at my last house and when something needed replacing, the flush plate popped off and although fiddly it was just a 2 minute job.

You made me laugh out loud there rinq! Yeah...that one's been ruled out already :-) Here's a pic as it is at the mo: We did half an update around 10 years ago - new bath/screen/sink/taps/cupboard doors/floor - but our budget didn't stretch to retiling. The main drivers today are: to get a toilet in here new tiles (wall & floor and U/F heating) TBH, I want it to look more modern and I want a toilet. If we have to do without the separate shower, so be it.

It may also be possible to have a concealed cistern, so have a 100mm stud wall and continue that the Length of the wall so you have a niche in the shower for shampoo etc. You’re probably best speaking to a plumber. I spent days searching for a short cistern and a weird size shower tray which my plumber was able to source very easily.
