Bathrooms Building a Home

Hi, I was wondering if anyone had any advice or suggestions for a family bathroom layout/design? We are building an extension on our home and I’m struggling to settle on a plan. Does the toilet need to be close to an outside wall? I’m hoping to tile and decorate it in a japandi style when completed.

The toilet is always the hardest part but as you're building from scratch, you can put it anywhere you like. The thick toilet pipe will have to reach an outside wall (or connect to an adjoining bathroom pipe) somewhere and it's most hidden under the floor so ideal to have the joists working in the right direction.

Then I always think about what I want to see first when I open the door. Probably not the toilet, I want that out of sight, but the bath or sink is beautiful when I leave the door open so why not make a feature of one in front of the window?

Thanks so much for your thoughts. You make a really good point about having the toilet out of sight. I had thought keeping the wet areas to the back would be good as floor more likely to get wet. But then toilet will be first thing you see.
The bath in front of the window would look great. But it’s just trying to fit in everything else so it looks good as the space isn’t too big…
Think I need to draw out some more options to see what can fit where…

His preferred layout looks like they forgot to put a toilet in, and to squeeze one in afterwards. We asked the builder to put 2 basins in our new build ensuite. Complete waste of space. There might be room for 2 basins, but there isn't room for 2 people! We have just redone the ensuite with a single basin and the room looks so much bigger

It will take your builder no time to pull down a brick wall. If it’s the one between the bedroom and the landing I think your builder will assure you it’s no bigger deal than taking out a wall made from wood studs. Just because it’s built of brick doesn’t mean it’s holding anything up. Building stud wall is a builders bread and butter and since your old brick wall would have likely needed skimming the cost won’t be much different so don’t be afraid to go further because you only want this level of dust and disruption once.

Hi Jayne, We have just last week helped someone who was also struggling with the layout in their bathroom. We had a video call with her to discuss the possible layouts and bounce around ideas. This was all done during our Power Hour. We do not design bathrooms but we can suggest an overall concept and look at things like tiles and decorative accessories. What an amazing bathroom! I'd suggest using a 90cm wide shower (and perhaps 90 deep and/or quadrant/corner, because of wet feet when stepping out in front of doorway), as there's 10cm on the side for the toilet drain (and some hacking into the chimney plaster to get to 110mm pipe +surround*). Then 80cm width for the toilet. Which leaves 100cm for a vanity. *) and if you can find some of these architraves+alike, you could widen the chimney breast so the 10cm won't look lost. The positive with a faux low wall (for toilet cistern) behind the vanity, is that any dresser can be turned into vanity without losing too much drawer space, as the drain+gooseneck can go behind instead of through. And a cabinet over the bath would not be ideal, just use the vanity drawers and for the smaller things hang some sleek looking mirrored medicine cabinets. Perhaps a towel rack above the bench. Or replace the bench for a storage bench or chest.

Definitely agree with Emily above. the toilet isn't the first thing you want to see when you walk in.

To keep the plumbing simple, it may be better to keep the toilet closer to an exterior wall and possibly consider the following:

1. change the door opening

2. use half height partition to seclude the toilet

3. If installing a wet room, for damp proofing purposes, I'd suggest fully tiling the surrounding walls (just in case you were considering the above pictured tiling method)
