Garden plan help

This autumn I'd like to inject some love into my garden ready for spring whilst the ground is still warm. As you can see, summer hasn't been ideal for planting. I don't have much of a budget but we do need to sort out the wall we had to build to make a path around the house! Basically, I have no idea where to start. It has so much potential.

Start by reading some of the advice stories on this site.

Consider staining the fences black and growing scented climbers on them.

Trim the hedge, power wash the patio. Replace the washing pyramid with a long line which is more to the side.

" Borrow the view " of the surrounding trees and shrubs. Make a feature of the little apple tree.

Maybe find the sunniest spot for a second patio for a dining table.

Loads of potential, enjoy your space.

Nice size garden. I do think the wall around the house looks odd. What do you think? Does it have to stay? You could finish laying the path but the wall is very restricting. I wouldn’t plant anything until the autumn rains set in (if they even do) as keeping new plants alive during the drought will be a lot of work and they will need constant watering. This can be a problem if you have a hosepipe ban in your area.

I agree with Sharon to change the rotary clothes line for a retractable line, which hides neatly away when not in use.

Plants you could try are ones that cope with drought. Beth Chatto created a garden that she only watered once on planting and then left it to survive on its own, so worth searching for it online. It’s in Suffolk, I think, and she has written a book about it (see below). I think I will have to follow her ethos as some of my plants are not doing well this year!
You do have a great size garden which could look great with the right planting.

Thanks for these. Im not sure if we can do the extra corner bit for number five, but I do like the layout, it will depend on cost, also don't need two tv areas, as we have a front lounge in the house anyway. the office was supposed to be a mixed use room, as a playroom with kids storage and also an occasional bedroom, so sofa bed In there. I know many people have hobs and sinks on islands, but I just think i'll end up dumping things on there.. I have four in the family, two adults, two kids, but we have a lot of people round for entertaining and parties, so space is what I'm after, but was also looking for somewhere the kids can go out of the way from adults if need be. As for kitchen, the reason for having large larder is to put not only food/drink spare fridge in there, but also things we don't use all that often in the kitchen, equipment etc.. I like everything clean and hidden away. The office on number 5 would be separate anyway as this concept includes sliding doors, which fold into the wall, so only entrance would be from outside, not sure if I can afford these yet though. Please keep suggestions coming, or alternatives, all welcome as I can't visualise.. thanks

Hi all, Thank you for your comments; I appreciate them! Natasha - the units you have suggested are very much what I had in mind. We will have a shaker kitchen and the media unit would also be shaker style and would have 4-6 cupboards with the TV in the middle with book shelves either side. Part of the reason we kept a partial wall was to make the space more usable. I can’t envision how the fully open plan room will be able to meet all our needs, but I am open to ideas! I feel that open plan would be more impressive, but potentially less usable. With regards to the doors. I do plan to reverse the doors both into the kitchen and family room part, but couldn’t work out how to do it on the app I used for the floor plan. It is a 1920s house and we have the original doors which we are planning to keep. We are also keeping a lot of floor space as when the table is not extended, we still have young children with lots of Lego and trains etc. I plan for these to be hidden in the cupboards at bedtime. J - we haven’t installed the kitchen but we have ordered it and paid a big deposit. Some of the units are bespoke/irregular sizes and I don’t think we would be willing to change this. Keiblum's suggestion saves an extension and could be built on. if the play space is no longer needed then that means the room uses can return to living, kitchen and dining. my thoughts run to keeping the doors to the patio bbq area, run the kitchen down that wall (and honestly I don't know how long or how many cabinets that could be), use your Ikea island and see if any you could make use of the under stair area for utility area (something like a European laundry) or maybe the fridge ? The fridge might be better in the cabinet run though. Add another set of doors where the kitchen sink once overlooked the garden and use this area as your dining. You might even find yiu have space for more informal seating. In doing this you will be able to connect your bbq area to the kitchen and find yourself using this area as an outdoor dining room, giving rise to possibilities of further development of this space to use rather than it be a walk through. Another thought is if the layout was swapped as described you might be able to explore gaining more outlook by adding a full length window into the wall between the two sets of doors, or even removing the wall completely and glazing it to become full glass right across the rear wall, but without changing the footprint? Putting in another set of french doors might be the more reasonable option if the kitchen is swapped, but Kieblem's suggestion makes great use of the available materials .

Start with listing what you want from your garden. It looks like you have young children so obviously they need somewhere to play. Do you want another patio / seating area anywhere? Are you a gardener -do you want a veg patch to grow your own? Do you have the time to tend a garden with lots of plants or do you want something easy to look after? Then think about where the sun is during the day. Are there any shady areas? Do you need some shade, eg building a pergola for dining that you could attach a shade sail to? Then look at photos of what other people have done for inspiration. Good luck!
