Thank you all so much for responding. I like the idea of green. We have large french doors looking into the garden and I think this might reflect and compliment the outside and so detract somewhat from the floor. It was properly sealed with Lithofin which was the recommended product and we have had it cleaned by a specialist company using diamond floor pads. We've been told it's just the natural composition of the stone manifesting itself! The upshot is instead of it being a lovely off white all over its streaked with brown giving an overall beigey/light brown appearance. It was a basement renovation so floor was previously concrete. It's such a large area that it makes quite an impact.

Amtico or similar?

Thanks all. When I look at the pictures I think it looks nice too, but it's a terrible kitchen to cook in. The hob is across the room from the electric oven and then the Aga is in a different place again. There aren't enough cupboards or work surface. I'm always walking round in circles to get stuff done! I hadn't thought about sealing the floor. I have some sealer so will try a test patch and see what it looks like. I have thought about painting the beams, but not sure as it's a big commitment. It's a very beamy house, but these are the only ones stained such a dark colour. Thanks for your ideas. Will have to mull it over some more...

It could work if the floor is much paler, as in the example below, but it’s tricky. I think a nice pale grey or pale beige floor would be less of a clash. Laminate comes in many styles, not just wood effect, so worth visiting some flooring stockists to have a look. Or how about LVT which is warmer underfoot and seems to be very popular?
