Help….subjects for art work in a kitchen?

Hi, I am going for a shell/ cream coloured kitchen with gold handles and gold/ grey/ cream worktop. It’s not a big space but I want to make a Statement with a gold industrial pendant light and an overlit picture above the hob.

I like abstract stuff / Van Gogh and Matisse. Hubbie likes life interest or rural scenes. What sort of subject is appropriate for a kitchen? I want to avid the obvious food posters and line drawings. I know the picture choice is subjective but can I go for a scenic story in a kitchen?

Of course you can. You can hang whatever art you like wherever you like it. And it doesn't have to colour-match the rest of the room. For me, the shape, size, orientation and framing of the art are more important in styling a room than the actual art, in regards to how well it 'fits' into a room. But the art itself could be anything - that you both love.

I have art work and ceramics everywhere. I would just say that choosing colours that are calming by an artist whose work you love might be a way forward. Strong abstract shapes in beautiful colours could work well. Mattise, Emma Lwarenson and Breon O'Casey......

Put your Heart in your Art! Don't agonise! start collecting WHAT YOU LIKE ! Create an art wall, slowly, a collection starting to the left of the window & eventually going round the door & above the window & down the side. Different shapes & sizes & not just pictures. Intersperse "found" objects ..we have seen a worn bicycle leather saddle on Houzz. Think wheels, a hand mirror, painting by numbers. Don't be too prescriptive but if you want to do a collection that is fun too..say flowers, pictures of doors & windows as a nod to the space, Paris/london, portraits, architecture. Just have fun. Get started on your art wall & see where it leads & don't do it all at once!

Hi there, You have a really great room and some modern wall art is definitely the way to go to finish it up, We have lots of large canvases available on Hutsly (http://www.hutsly.com/collections/wall-art/material_canvas) including some in the colours you were after but I would have to agree with the comment above about using different colours to give a bit of life and colour to your space, maybe something like this: Available here. They could work for both the wall behind your sofa and the one behind your TV and for example the first and last one are in a similar theme so they would go well together. One large piece of art or many?

I think a piece of metal wall art or a soft sculpture. It's a busy room with a lot of competing items and I just think art would be lost. It needs a quieter background. A large mirror might work too. Gallery wall is an idea but you need to theme it first. I don't think family pics in black and white is the right look for this style house. A shelf with a glass display would catch the light but is a lot of work cleaning wise obviously.

So sorry, I forgot to thank you for your comments. I am attaching the artwork I am going for. I will use a light oak or white frame. The oak suits the picture but the white ties in more with the kitchen. I investigated getting the poster professionally framed with double mounts and a lovely frame but I think that may be overkill in a kitchen….the cost was certainly overkill!

Nice picture. I like the black frame. It will introduce a bit of contrast in your kitchen.
