Kitchen redesign

last year

previous owners dug out sloped garden for a kitchen extension, this means our windows start at bottom of grass! we hate not being able to have patio doors out to garden and digging out garden further is not an option as no digger access. an architecht suggested internal stairs to a door, but cant decide if that would just be strange and costly and eat into kitchen spacezx any innovative solutions?

Hi, not sure if you've dealt with this yet or not (as it was posted 5 months ago).

I understand your concern here, and I see that doors across the back wouldn't be possible. I disagree with the architect to install internal stairs, I feel like this would cost a lot and not really work. My suggestion would be, if you were to redesign it architecturally to add the most design impact and potential uplift .. I would install a full width window at eye level (a picture window). You'd basically make the top half of the wall looking out to the garden all glass, so it would open up the view (currently broken with partition between two windows). Would you be redesigning the kitchen also? As I would consider losing the wall cabinets on the right, to provide an undisturbed clear view to the garden.

Architecturally this will give you so much impact and completely change the feel of the space.

Although I realise this doesn't resolve your access to the garden issue, I hope this helps.

Furthermore, if you were to consider redesigning the space entirely, including the kitchen I would consider incorporating some window bench / banquette seating where the cupboards and sink currently are.

There are, 99% of the time, many ways to design a kitchen. We don’t sell kitchens, but we design lots and lots - and almost all of these are designed with the end users in on the design process . This might be something that would work for you - to be a part of designing the space - then when the design is complete, you simply shop around and ask places to quote using that same design . It's also whether 6 seats at an island is bit OTT for the relatively small space? I've messed around with an idea with 4 seats and 4 x 450 cabinets facing lounge too. The island is going to be for non-food storage (as it's got UFH underneath whereas the other runs don't) so not sure how much of that type of storage we actually need!

I think if you're set on knocking through into Dining room then the cooker has to be moved! Not convinced you'll have much more worktop space tbh - but you'll also have dining table right there to prep food and do some baking with kids. You'll get four 600mm cabinets along the 'new' wall (where the radiator is at the moment) - tall fridge, 600mm drawers, cooker, 600mm drawers - so you'll have space either side of cooker. Plus you'll get another cabinet or two (depending on how big) to the right of the sink. Or you could add a little peninsula there (where the wall is at the moment) to provide more worktop space and undercounter storage - couple of bar stools on the dining room side? Just make sure there is a minimum of 120cm space to walk between each run of cabinets.
