Flooring Design Dilemma

Rug advice needed

Hello we want to add a rug in this room. its foxing me big time, i think with the colour i will go nuetral ish, the big issue is the size/shape. does it sit only in front of the blue sofa ? or in the

middle of the room, or under the chairs that usually face towards the garden ? should i go for an oblong, square / round ? this site has helped loads in the past and i have usually found the solution. many thanks in advance.

It’s customary to have the front sofa legs on the rug, to prevent it looking like it’s floating. It helps keep the rug in place too. Here’s some inspiration and advice on placing rugs. I wouldn’t place the rug too near the dining chairs as it can be difficult to push them back.

We have lots of rugs on Hutsly too but I would suggest this one: It's in an Ash Grey with a faded pattern and ombré effect. It's quite subtle while still having an edge to it with the faded effect. It's also a bit darker than the rest of your decor which will bring contrast without having to go for colours. It's available here. It also comes in blue should you feel daring : Available here. I would personally go for something like this:It's made of jute which is a texture that would actually be perfect for your space and again it's not in crazy colours while still having something interesting about it. Agree with Carolina, however, i'd go for something that will cover as much of it as possible. You can't go wrong with plain, it can't clash with anything. Whatever portion of the flooring is visible will clash with anything that has a pattern. So plain grey, pale beige, dark cream, or even a dark brown to tie in with the wood colour. You don't necessarily need to search for a rug the right size, most carpet shops especially the independants, and many on line can make rugs from any carpet.

In my opinion it depends on budget. The best option is to take off the wood cladding and coving and then get a plasterer in. The budget option is to sugar soap these walls to ensure there is no wallpaper paste residue, then fill and sand any cracks and also use decorators calk to fill cracks in corners and next to woodwork. Then you need to mist coat the walls which is basically a watered down coat of paint. When that is dry it will need two rollered coats of emulsion (3 if it’s a strong colour). A very flat Matt paint shows imperfections least. After the first coat of paint check it for any bits that might need more filling. In conclusion the key to a nice finish on the walls is lots of preparation and then a low/ no sheen paint.

I would disagree personally - I would either go for a rectangle that goes under the two chairs and side table, facing the garden - to make this a little zone of it's own and to get an inward view on the room, drawing your eye into this area of the room.

Or to a large circle that goes under the far corner edge of the sofa and the middle of the room, tying all the areas together.

You are doing the right thing by taping them out.

If you are having trouble - maybe find the rug you want first and see what sizes it comes in and plan those out to see what works.
