Hello, I personally feel it is the door that is the issue and not the fireplace, If your layout outside of this room allows you to move the door along the wall to the other end I would consider as an option by getting some no obligation quotes from reputable builders for costs, it would give you more choice of room layouts, if its a stud wall it should be a relatively easy job for a qualified builder and probably the cost wouldn't be too much. Without being in the room it really is difficult to assess the situation, if you could upload some more photos taken from each corner of the room to the opposite corner diagonally and from front to back it may give others more of an insight into assisting you.

PINK SMEG!!!!!! Always wanted one so, when my fridge died (and it took forever to die!), I treated myself. It's the one with the small freezer in the top compartment which suits my needs. It matches my worktop tiles, white with pink corners which look like a diamond pattern. I have loads of pink objects hanging from cup hooks which, all in all, makes friends laugh. Just not sure if they're laughing at me or my humour.

Thank you all. Apologies I'm not sure how to answer individually. I agree that the skirting board jutting out looks very strange, most rooms in the house have some 'interesting' design choices. Would you believe that the man who made these changes has now set up his own building company! The lamp on the left is from IKEA, I only bought it a few months ago so it should still be available. Unfortunately the lamp on the right is a flea market find so no idea where it came from. The second alcove is substantially smaller than the one with the bookcase currently in it. I'm just concerned that it may look 'unbalanced' with the built in shelves. I haven't managed to find pictures of rooms with alcoves differing in width. I do love the idea of built in shelves, it seems safer than our current bookcase and adding the storage underneath the last shelf would be helpful. I have found an original black cast iron Victorian fireplace with a width of 125cm versus the 140cm of the chimney. Would this work with the green wall? The room is painted in Breakfast Room Green and I've attached a photograph of the fireplace. Thank you for the suggestion about the mirror. This is the first time that the living room has been tidy enough to have the mirror against the chimney breast so it's helpful to have opinions on it's size. Thank you all again!

Thanks. Really appreciate the suggestions. Had briefly considered a round mirror but thought it may not work well with the round chandelier. Will try mocking something up for size. The room has Art Deco touches so maybe something octagonal could also work and provide some angles? The TV thought was tongue in cheek!
