You could add some table or floor lamps in various corners to create cosiness. A wooden dining table will also add warmth. You can have neutral walls but add a bit of colour with a rug and cushions. If you nothing else, paint the ceiling. It’s light sapping. The room will be so much brighter and lighter. 😊

Yes, just removed the brown shelf and changed the radiators and the wall colours to an off white.
The sofa style we like is Squishmeister from Loaf. Colour would probably be neutral (light grey?). I will try and put the Roman blinds on that small window and see how that looks.

Maybe something like this? The walls are Desert Rose by Paint and Paper which may be worth trying? it looks a big bare without a large plant and accessories but you get the gist. I might get a table with a bench one side so you can push the table against the wall when not in use. I’d zone the sofa area with a rug, the one i chose is supposedly not cream! I’d make sure the sofa has some contrast with the carpet although a rug will help

Hi minnie101, how would you go about toning the ceiling down? I have similar ceiling and one wall in my bedroom. It had 3 coats of osmo oil but is looking very orange after 10 years.

Hello. I was studying your space, and I came up with some ideas. If you are open to them, here they are:

1.Get a brushed cotton sofa with legs at least 8cm; it gives some airiness to a room, making it look more spacious.

2.When choosing a table, allow the minimum distance between the edge of your table and a wall to be 90cm. This is for people to get in and out of their chairs comfortably. In addition, purchase armless dining chairs, which will give you a clean look for your dining space.

3.You asked what to do with a wall with a small window; I suggest having sheers and curtains across the whole wall. It will soften the place and will make a room feel larger.

4.You have little spotlights on the walls, which are excellent for creating a different mood in the evening. They can be nicely framed using decorative moulding. It will elevate your space.

5.If you like a moulding wall design, you can have picture frame moulding. You can even use wallpaper inside those frames. It is a relatively inexpensive way to luxe up your space.

6.Your ceiling has an orange undertone; to tone down that orange, go for cooler undertones in your curtains and upholstery. Here I mean whatever colour you choose, grey for your sofa and a lighter colour for your curtains, look for cool undertones when choosing them. Cool undertones are blues, purples, and greens. When selecting a grey sofa, try to identify the undertone. Does this grey colour have blue, green or purple?

Honestly, I would be convincing hubby that the dark ceiling is sucking all the light from the room. Paint it white and it will lift the room and I am sure most of your other furniture will look much better and you can then just apply decorative touches.
