Uneven, stone steps down to my flat..........how to replace?
Comments (25)Hi everyone. I just wanted to show you my new steps. They were finally finished on Saturday last week. A large wooden frame was made over the steps and filled with concrete so not access or egress for a whole week. They were then plastered with a very fine concrete to give them a smooth appearance. I love the new steps. The hand rail is a total feature and I cannot wait till my seeds have germinated and the whole area will be covered in geraniums and begonias. What do you think? Comments (12)Thanks Rachel - that's really helpful. Agree that's where we thought the pergola would go and like the idea of a wall to separate the different areas. Plus we have lots of bricks left over from the old patio which we're taking up as it was a nightmare to keep weed free! Do you think it would be too much patio to have it going round the whole corner of house where bifolds are (at different levels) and stretching across under the pergola? Imagine we could break it up with lots of pots or some 'holes' in it for planting? Tiles - thanks for the tip. We're having a wood effect vinyl planks so we wouldn't be able to do the same look inside and outside which I agree looks nice. We'll probably choose a type of Indian stone but need a shade that will work next to whit render (new extension) and the red brick of old part of the house. Comments (6)I had hardwood bi-folds fitted last year and it took me ages to decide what to get. The reason I finally chose bi-folds was I use all my garden doors several times a day even in the winter and just opening the one section is easy and folds back neatly and doesn’t catch the wind as easily. There also have magnetic catches. And opening three sections is very neat and gives the biggest opening. However these openings are only two metres wide. Where I have a 2.4 opening I’ve got French windows and the 60cm doors fold back and hook onto the side windows well. Comments (20)Does anybody have photographs of steps down to rear extension? My plan is to have a side entrance into a large hallway with steps down to the rear extension. Not sure whether to knock the wall down also the create a inside balcony and maintain the Hallway ceiling height in to the extension. The extension would be living / kitchen / dining area. If anyone has any photographs of similar projects to help me visualise it, that would be wonderful. thank you!...See More
2 years agoNot ideal. Steps immediately outside a doorway, any doorway, is clumsy and could be a trip hazard, I feel. Far better to keep the raised patio as it is and have the steps down further on. Or create a smaller patio by the bifolds and step down to another further on. This sort of thing looks dodgy. One of my relatives has similar steps and the older folk really struggle with them.

last yearHere's a garden I designed in Reading Berkshire with a small top terrace immediately outside the bifolds and raised beds instead of a handrail to prevent accidental stepping off. There is a small kitchen area, and a snug with a gas fireplace.
Earlier someone suggested that two steps would be sufficient for a 600mm drop - this is incorrect. An ideal riser height for outdoor steps is 150mm (maximum 180mm), so this means that you need 4 steps if you have a 600mm drop.
