Finish after re-rendering project

We are in process of modernising our 1930s mock Tudor home. We have a great modern rear extension and have now contracted a renderer who is well on the way to complete a re-render of our house in Weber Monocouche.

It looks great but we want to find a solution to get a good finish between the lower facing brick and the new render. Due to the house being a mix of new and old, the render is either sticking out slightly from the lower facing brick or there is a lip of facing brick. I have attached photos to show you what I mean.

I am looking for suggestions on how we can finish this join so it looks uniform and attractive. Could we use composite boards or fibre cement cladding? What do you think would work? We are open-minded to any ideas even covering all of the lower course of bricks but it needs to look neat and modern.

Yes that's quite a lip. I would leave the brickwork as is as it seems to be in reasonable condition and use some sort of cladding for the top part. Larch is very attractive and silvers with time. You could go vertical or in a more New England style of laying it horizontally. Fibre cement board could look great too but there's quite a lot going on with the feature window so keep the boards as large as possible and a simple end to end arrangement. There are many colours to choose from.

Thanks Isla. So you reckon leave the lower bricks exposed and use the boarding over the render, or vice versa?

I've just been looking. Awesome. My last house was a victorian reno. We had an old scullery and it hadnt been touched since the 60s was amazing what we found. But your house is simply divine. We have similar taste so trusting you even more now on my exterior paint job. This house has been everything i dreamed of so far. All of the projects are very impressive, the transformations are all pretty amazing and should definitely provide inspiration to anyone looking to do similar projects. I was personally torn between the country kitchen and the sloping garden, in the end my vote went to the sloping garden project, the transformation from a blank awkward looking area to such a cleverly designed and attractive space is amazing.

If you can match the bricks do and then paint the window frames. Man About The House painted his (I think) UPVC windows a lovely sage green which would brighten the whole thing. He has posted some pics somewhere- it looks really lovely. Hopefully he can advise. I’ve totally copied his idea and the new windows are arriving in a couple of weeks. Can’t wait to see the difference it’ll make to our tired exterior!

I don't know why your decorator said that, unless he hoped he'd get the job of doing the continuous repainting! If you want to render it then a through coat render is much better than a sand and cement render that you need to keep repainting after every little chip. A through coloured render will have the colour running all the way through it so if a little chip or dent happens you won't notice so much as you would in a painted render (depending on the colour you paint it) There are lots of different render options. Some are better than others, some are even self-cleaning! Often buildings are rendered only down to cill height on the ground floor because you're more likely to get things bashing into it lower down, which can cause more low-scale damage that then needs maintenance. I'm not a fan of painted brickwork because it flakes off and can look terrible. It depends on what you paint it with though - some kind of lime whitewash might have a softer effect and be a bit more like a render finish so a bit of a compromise option. This would give a pale colour for the wall at ground floor level so the grey windows contrast with it, like the white windows above contrast with the brick. Alternatively you could stain the brickwork, which is permanent. The bricks above are quite a dark multi-mix so you could pick a stain similar to the darkest shades in the original brickwork to tie in with those and work with the grey framed windows downstairs. Either way you need to make it look intentional for it to work. Hope this helps!

At the moment that lip is a perfect catchment place for rainwater. If the boards/cladding or whatever you choose is slightly proud of the brickwork that would also help to direct rainwater away from the base of your house. Another option is to re- render bringing the render out furnther to the same elevation as the brickwork. On rereading your question maybe a finished render over the whole of the surface would be the neatest and tie it together. The thickness difference will have to be made up though to make it look seamless.

I’ve just messaged my brother who is a builder to see what he says. I wonder if there is such a thing as a brick edger that can be applied on the rendered bit to tidy it up a little? Surely there must be! 😊

These houses seem to have some kind of edging strip between the render and the bricks so it looks like such a thing exists.

This is my brother’s answer. Hope it helps a little, but it looks like Wickes or a builders merchants is the place to ask?
