new kitchen layout help!!

Need some design help…

We will be replacing the kitchen in this room.

No further walls can / will be knocked down.

Single door entering from hall one end and French doors to the garden at the other.

Wife would love an island, and a happy wife is a happy life.. she’d also love a breakfast knook… I am not sure we have a space for it all..

All ideas are welcome, thank you!!!

I don't want to pour cold water on your wife's aspirations but that is very narrow for an island. If you allow 600mm for a run of units each side then about 1m each side for access then that leaves about 400mm for an island. Not enough. If you used the long wall for a bank then you would have about 2.5m left over which might just give you enough clearance for a narrow 600mm island. I don't think an island is the best use of the space. I would go for a galley style with some tweaks to get the maximum storage. Do you mean a breakfast nook with a banquette and some seating as that would also be very tricky. I would go for a galley with a full height bank on the left and a round table with a couple of streamlined chairs in the bottom right corner as it is a bit wider there. You are also going to need a lot of filler panels as the walls are not square which will not be usuable storage space. If it was me I would start marking out some of these dimesions on the floor with tape or use cardboard boxes or something to get an accurate idea of scale.

You could have the option of a smaller, more narrow island but I don't think it will be great for flow. You'll need to use smart cabinetry so that you maximise storage as well

Thanks for the reply, don't think I'm quit at that stage yet though. Was more looking for general ideas on where cooking/dining areas could be located and how to fit in the utility and loo. Hoping that others who have done similar projects could share ideas on how to get the best layout for the space.

Hi there, I have a idea for the kitchen. I think your trying to pop too much in the space. And in your proposed plan, ironically your creating a less efficient kitchen as you've lost the wall space. But when the wall is down your going to have a nice generous room which will be lovely for the family. My thought is that you should stop seeing the space as two rooms. But think of it as one large dual purpose room. Think traditional large country kitchens with the cabinetry around the walls and a central large table. of course this can be in any style. This way, you can leave the door to the loo where it is. The drains can stay put and you just need to open it all up. And probably take out the fireplace...maybe :D This is my quick sketch. Extend the counter to the doorway. Then you will have a nice long run of counter. Plenty of work space. Remove the chimney and fill up that wall with all the fridge and tall n' bulky stuff. So this becomes your pantry and other storage. Then pop your large table in the centre of the room. And as a Mr J Oliver likes to say - Happy days.

Hi Rosey, Hope these answers help: There are plenty of different ways you could redesign the space so it would be good to get really clear on what you want to base designs on. For the drains this is not that unusual, and is likely to mean that it is a shared drain, so it's owned by your water utility company. This might be worth checking. Yes any raised external platform / patio would need planning permission and may be refused on the grounds of overlooking and reducing the neighbours privacy. Fabulous ideas from both Amuri Interiors and Interior Workings. I agree having a pot filler and stove on the island is so much more convenient especially when you want to avoid moving around too much (which can sometimes get a bit messy too). Depending on budget, I would recommend getting a more powerful (and less noisy) extractor fan for the island. With this change, the original stove location can be additional counter top space for use especially when putting things in / taking things out of the adjacent oven / grill / microwave.
