Design Dilemma Kitchens Living Rooms

New kitchen layout help

This is my new kitchen following house move. Very unpractical for me as I have health issues. I need the triangle to work better and be closer together.

I plan to have a small island with deep drawers as they work better for me. The tall cupboards are behind a partition wall which is coming down so that space can also be used 9as shown in last photo)

Any advice much appreciated

Hi Amber, I'm thinking of moving the stove on the island, do you think this is something you could do? In this way the stove, refrigerator and sink are closer..

I whole heartedly agree with Amuri Interiors- hobs on islands are fabulous! Another possibility if you can get plumbing through the island also is to include a pot filler tap- saving on carrying heavy pots across the kitchen- or simple to have a the island as your sink and prep area with the hob behind.

Thanks for the reply, don't think I'm quit at that stage yet though. Was more looking for general ideas on where cooking/dining areas could be located and how to fit in the utility and loo. Hoping that others who have done similar projects could share ideas on how to get the best layout for the space.

Hi Rosey, Hope these answers help: There are plenty of different ways you could redesign the space so it would be good to get really clear on what you want to base designs on. For the drains this is not that unusual, and is likely to mean that it is a shared drain, so it's owned by your water utility company. This might be worth checking. Yes any raised external platform / patio would need planning permission and may be refused on the grounds of overlooking and reducing the neighbours privacy. You have a lovely, huge space to work with- that’s terrific. Are the position and size of the 2 windows fixed? I’d suggest getting the ideal, functional kitchen design first and then considering window placement next.. it may be that a single large window suits the final design better. I would change the fridge position to get it into either side of the main kitchen run. Ideally it should have counter space immediately adjacent to it. Imagine yourself grabbing and pouring milk for cereal.. and immediately putting it back.. can you do it with nary a step? For your oven setup, consider whether you might want one (or even both) directly under your hob. It can make a huge difference to efficiency for the cook, especially if their meals tend to involve active use of both oven and hob. Imagine making spaghetti and meatballs with garlic bread… how easy is it to bake, grill, and stir the sauce without burning anything? Or having to squeeze past any kitchen visitors in your kitchen zone to check? ( And for draining the pasta, how far is it to the sink with boiling water?) I’d also pull the wine fridge out of the main kitchen run. It might be lovely to create a bar in the existing Aga area.

I think plan2 looks/works best but i'd suggest a few changes. For the tower run, having only a 20mm filler is to tight and doors open more than 90 degrees so they'll be rubbing at the freezer end, i'd suggest changing the 600 and 800 larders to a 1200 breakfast style larder, having drawers and worktop inside, shelved above and power for toaster etc, the doors can be pocket style so they open then slide down the sides out of the way when in use, make the wall nib a bit wider by about 100mm so you have 50-70mm fillers at each end, probably bring the towers forward (or make them extra deep) and this would allow for the pocket doors to slide away more. Depending on ceiling height you could have extra tall towers or top boxes on top and then infill about 50-100mm up to the ceiling. Also check the height of the appliances as in the pics it looks to high, i'd have a 450 frontal with pan drawer and internal drawer instead. On the opposite wall as long as all the 800 drawer units end past the window is good, window sill same as worktop possibly, (either end the run before or after the window) lose the 400 open unit in front of the wall nib and have a door (door could be made to look like 2 drawer fronts to match) on this as it will be just a dust trap, in the 1000 drawer units i'd suggest having internal drawers for utensils etc, the corner unit is good especially with the fly moon pull out as they're great (in my opinion) and as the corner post is made on site its gives the fitter more flexibility in positioning the units as its not a fixed corner. The sink run is fine but i wouldn't suggest opening a d/washer door to let the steam out as it can damage the surrounding doors, cabinets, decor panels and even worktops (thread on mumsnet where steam has damaged granite worktops). For the island if a 500 bin is big enough then fine but you might find a 600 pull out is better as its usually a 4 bin unit, possibly change the 1000 1+2 so its a 2 pan with internal drawer and then on the other side i'd have 2x 800 which would look more symetrical. For wall units its up to you, but if its an electric hob (especially induction) the extractor should be wider than the hob and if this area is going to be a main prep area than having wall units you can add extra lighting.

Fabulous ideas from both Amuri Interiors and Interior Workings. I agree having a pot filler and stove on the island is so much more convenient especially when you want to avoid moving around too much (which can sometimes get a bit messy too). Depending on budget, I would recommend getting a more powerful (and less noisy) extractor fan for the island.

With this change, the original stove location can be additional counter top space for use especially when putting things in / taking things out of the adjacent oven / grill / microwave.
