Help to change the front of my ugly 80's (infill) house?
Comments (34)Hi Malley. Thank you for asking my advice! For what it's worth here goes; I agree with you that no extension of the front window is needed, the oak framed porch with A frame exposed, extending further out as per celery girls input with wisteria and box plants looks great. Regarding colour, I'm afraid I disagree about the brown windows, to me they scream 80's developer taste and are very dating and clash with the red. If you are going to go to the expense of replacing the windows to enlarge the apertures I would consider grey or grey/green grey/blue, these will all tone nicely with the red brick, white would be too harsh. Love the idea of the juliette window BTW. Do a search in Houzz for red bricks and grey windows, you will get a lot of images to think about. I'm not sure I agree that adding solar panels to the roof will be an improvement, yes they will break up those tiles, but they are not a thing of beauty are they, could they be on the rear instead? If budget did allow, after you have done your extension, windows etc I would look into the cost of replacing those roof tiles with slate as again I think they are dating, but agree with Daisy that it would probably be expensive and would not increase value on the house. Comments (0)Houzzers we need help! This hideous porch is ruining the look of our house. It’s also impractical as it is southwest facing and the glazing means nothing can be stored without fading or melting! We can’t get rid of it as need the extra space it offers and so had hoped to adapt it by adding gable roof and building up and all round in brick. We’ve had a quote from trusted source and it’s just not proving viable to do it; cost per square meter ridiculous. I am hoping we can peel of that fake leading but any other smart, clever ideas as so how we can improve the look of this porch would be gratefully appreciated. Comments (9)@Jonathan I agree the house does have potential. The reason for bringing the porch or entrance forward is currently when you enter the house the stairs are very close and I just want that space and more of an open feeling. I would like the arch shape entrance in this picture rather than the style of porch that it is currently. I’m hoping this can work. @Emily unfortunately that can’t be bought forward as a lot of other work is going to be carried out extending at the back. That bathroom will be made into an en-suite as it’s tiny and that will link to master bedroom. I am really liking the stone colour around the windows and arch and I’m thinking of that as an option, just wondering how to achieve this....See MoreHelp with ugly house exterior
Comments (18)Erica, rendering the whole facade in a modern smooth render in a colour you love (dark grey works well if you like it, or a more traditional cream or stone colour) is probably the way to go. It will unify the ugly (sorry!) flat roofed extension with the rest of the house. Then a smart front door with a porch over, providing you’re permitted to come out from the building line. You could even extend the porch over the whole front, which would unify it further. Some tall pots with topiary or small trees, or something like bamboo in them would work well against the rendered walls, and smart lights either side of the front door. Also might be worth asking your builders if they have any suggestions for disguising the flat roof to make it look less, well, flat! Good luck with it! Catherine...See More- last month
