Kitchen Island sizing help

I'm in the process of designing and getting a new kitchen with an island. However budget is starting to come into play so I'm playing around with the island sizing to get the price within our budget.
We can have a 1200mm deep island (including standard depth cabinets with 300mm overhand for the seating either side so seating facing opposite eachother) it will be 1800mm in length. However doing this is obviously increasing the price due to the cabinets being a standard depth rather than a more shallow depth at 30cm deep. If we did that with a 300mm overhand either side the overall depth would be 90cm which I feel is too skinny but would save us more in cost of cabinets and worktop needed as there will be a downturn at the end of the island also as its coming off a wall so just the one downturn needed.
My other issue is we have 2 options with the cabinets width we can either do 3x 600 wide cabinets which add up to the 1800mm wide given abit extra for the thickness of the downturn. Or 2x 900mm wide cabinets which is the same 1800mm length. But I know with quartz at 20mm thick the size of the 2x 900mm cabinets will be fine to support the over hang of 300mm either side with standard depth. But if we decided to go down the compact laminate route we would need additional supports and I'm not sure it's even doable with 900mm wide cabinets but it is with 3x 600mm wide cabinets and additional support.
I'm trying to weigh up options but dont want a skinny looking island when we can have bigger but if we had bigger we would most likely have to have the compact laminate with additional support added on. But if we went with the 90cm deep option we could stick with quartz because the overall cost would be cheaper. If that makes sense!
Can people advise on what you think, if 90cm will be fine given the 180cm length or if deep would be better? Thankyou

If you have the space, definitely the first option, mine is 1200mm x 2300, I have no hob on island but it's definitely not too far to have conversation with someone on the other side :-). I'm just imagining it, if you have 900mm that is too close for guests sit, they won't have much space to put their drink down if the hob is right in front of them. Also it's a safety thing, if they are sitting down in front of you cooking they could potentially end up with oil on their face if it spits or having their face steamed lol. I'm not sure about having 4 seats in a row on the island, they do look nice in photos but what about when guests are sitting there and you're not cooking, everyone will be sitting in a row and it's hard to talk to people. I have 4 seats towards one end of the island, 2 on the one side and 2 on the other in a L shape, when I have people round, it's quite socialable as we can all see each other without turning our bodies or heads too much :-). Also as you have mentioned, lots of storage options in your first option. As clemfandan said, make sure you incorporate an overhang on the island on the seating area ( usually 300mm ) otherwise people will have no where to put their legs :-)

A couple of thoughts on the design that may help you replan...... There seems to be very little counter space between your hob and sink, once you set dirty dishes on one side and clean on the other, where will you prep? Perhaps you could put the hob in your island? Or move it or the sink to the other wall? It’s worth considering a change from your wall oven to fitting one (or two) under the counter one. You’ll get back the worktop space, and thus could easily move your fridge next to the pantry. We opted for two full size Neff slide and hide door ovens under our counters , one regular oven, one steam oven, with our hob directly above them and it’s one of the best decisions I made. I have the ergonomic and space benefits of a range cooker, but superior capacity and functionality for my needs. An induction hob not only looks sleeker, but effectively gains you work space too. You can stick a cookbook / chopping board/ etc directly next to your pot while cooking and it will be fine. Karen from One Plan is terrific and will draw you a proper well thought out plan. Alternatively a virtual planning appointment with Ikea will also result in a plan, and unlike Howdens, an actual price, too. Both companies work in standard cm dimensions....a 40cm wide cabinet is a 40cm cabinet is a 40cm cabinet. (One difference is depth and height.... Ikea units are a little bit deeper, and a little bit taller, so they have a little bit more capacity). Hope that helps.

I prefer the island option. im not sure what you want/need to include but it appears (by eye) to give the greatest amount of space. I’d reduce the island to 900mm and give the extra space between the units. You could have the plumbed appliances on the island and seating like this with a 300mm overhang for the stools. This kitchen is longer than yours but i think a tad wider assuming the tiles are 600. The island could be a lighter colour than the other units making it feel a but wider

If the room is big enough then i'd design the island with shallow depth units on the back and then an overhang (i always use dummy drawer line units for these especially if its a handleless door style so you can open the doors) and that would keep the island in proportion and not look to narrow (like it is now). But this also depends on the worktop you've chosen, as you have a howdens plan you are going to be limited to what howdens can supply and that might be why the howdens 'designer'/salesperson has designed the island like it is. You could start adding 300 units at each end, but you'd lose one seating position, the other option may be to have 'downstands' where the worktop carries on down to the floor, again depending on your worktop it may need to be a mitred joint, especially if you have a grain/pattern/edge profile. Even then if the room is big enough i'd still have shallow depth units for the extra storage and to make a real statement of the island also have the downstands, lots of quartz worktops are in jumbo sizes and these are 1400mm wide so your island could be upto 2400x1400 so you could easily have the post in the middle with a bit of careful planning.

Ok, you've planned a peninsula rather than an island, which will look fine with 600mm deep cabinets and a 900mm deep worktop. Why have you drawn an overhang on both sides of the peninsula? Accessing cupboards/drawers will be easier without an overhang.

I think you’re getting an island and a peninsula mixed up. You have planned a peninsula. An island you can walk all the way around. The downturn that I think you’re referring to is known as a waterfall. You don’t seem to have a lot of worktop or storage space so just have as many storage cupboards as you can comfortably fit. If you do want a deeper peninsula and can’t afford 600mm deep back to back units you could always consider a base unit at 600mm deep on one side and a wall unit at 300mm deep on the reverse of it. You would just need to buy the legs separately. Once the worktop is on nobody will know.

Thankyou for your responses ladies yes I mean peninsula rather than island just always call them an island as alot of people dont know what i mean when I refer to it by its proper name. The reason the over hang on both sides is for 3 seats either side so its more so used for extra worktop space and seating rather than functionality the cabinets below are for extra storage due to lack of them in the main part of the kitchen but storage is being created in a separate utility so were gaining alot of storage compared to our current kitchen. The island will hold thing's I don't need on a regular basis.

If the peninsula is for seating 6 people, a table and chairs will be much more practical.

Island is independent of the rest of the kitchen units and should have access all around it. A peninsula is attached to other base cabinets and usually forms a return. Some peninsulas are attached to a wall on one side. They are not the same thing at all.
