Caldervale Road, Clapham

This project is a thoughtfully layered renovation of a Victorian home, balancing strong architectural character with contemporary functionality and refined interior design. The brief focused on enhancing flow, improving everyday living, and celebrating original features while introducing a cohesive, modern aesthetic throughout.

At ground floor level, the layout has been carefully reworked to create a clear sense of arrival. The entrance hall features geometric encaustic tiles, oversized brass thresholds, and restored stained-glass detailing, setting the tone for the home. Original brickwork has been exposed along the stairwell and hallway, adding warmth and texture while grounding the scheme in the building’s heritage.

The hallway transitions seamlessly into the main living spaces via arched openings and crittall-style glazing, softening sightlines and improving natural light. Herringbone timber flooring, laid with precision, runs through key circulation areas, reinforcing continuity and craftsmanship.

A bespoke butler’s pantry acts as a functional link between the front of the house and the open-plan living space beyond. Dark, flat-panel cabinetry is paired with metal and glass shelving, antique mirror backing, and integrated wine storage, creating a design-led yet practical zone for entertaining and everyday use. Materials and finishes are intentionally aligned with the kitchen to ensure visual cohesion.

Upstairs, the former bedroom has been transformed into a luxurious master ensuite, designed with a strong sense of symmetry and calm. The layout incorporates a walk-through dressing area, bespoke joinery, and a double vanity with marble cladding. The wet room features a built-in bench, tiled shower screen, and illuminated niches, combining comfort with high-end detailing. Brass fittings, heritage-inspired sanitaryware, and carefully selected tiles bring warmth and depth to the space.

Throughout the project, the colour palette draws from muted heritage tones—deep reds, soft greens, warm neutrals, and crisp whites—allowing bold elements such as brick, tile, and stained glass to stand out without overwhelming the spaces. Lighting has been layered throughout, combining decorative pendants with discreet architectural lighting to enhance mood and functionality.

The result is a modern Victorian home that feels cohesive, characterful, and highly considered—where original features are respected, contemporary interventions are confident, and every detail has been carefully resolved to deliver both beauty and long-term liveability.
