Kitchen design in 20 minutes, really?

One question we are often asked a variant of, is"...aren't you able to create a design and visual for our kitchen quickly, like we would receive in high-street DIY stores?"

Well…

Our interpretation of the word 'bespoke' is that every single element of your kitchen is considered and designed truly unique to you, as such the design process takes up a considerable amount of time, something we in fact pride ourselves on. Ultimately, we want to provide you with a space you are proud of and one that serves you perfectly.

Our first undertaking is to understand the client’s needs, from how the space will be used, to how it will fit cohesively into the home, with sensitivity to the architecture, materials and colours.

Following from this initial client briefing, be it face to face or via Zoom meetings, all our designs begin on a blank piece of paper. We consider the anthropometrics of the space and client to set things out such as worktop and appliance heights, to ensure a comfortable working area for every client. Window positions and the way in which natural daylight enters the space affects the colours within the kitchen differently throughout the day, so we take note of this and how we can best utilise it. Cabinetry and detail lighting is considered for those days where natural light is short, as well as to offer a cohesive ambiance that works with the installation. Additionally, we conceal M&E services as much as possible, so as not to disturb this cohesiveness. Finally, smart storage solutions and consideration for how the client’s needs may develop in the future, be it through the expansion of their inventory or even additional family members.

This first draft would then usually consist of a 2D drafting, showing the basic layout of the kitchen and key design elements, with dimensions to help the client visualise the design intent. The next stage is a greyscale or 'clay model' 3D visualisation, which highlights the geometry without too many stimulus that can draw attention away, not only from the form, but also key usability factors. At this stage material samples etc accompany the 3D visuals.

Finally, a second set of visuals working in the chosen materials brings the installation to life and offers the client a full look at the space, inclusive of the surrounding architecture, with correct window positioning etc to simulate accurately the way in which light will interact with our furniture. Smaller design detailing such as edge profiles or door pulls are highlighted in this stage, where they may have been hard to interpret for the client from the 2D draftings.

Ultimately our intention is for the client to be fully comfortable and understand exactly what they are getting and how it will work for them, before any machines are turned on to commence manufacture. We are a small team operating with a designer maker ethos that means you will work alongside a single designer right up to manufacture before meeting the maker/s who will be manufacturing and installing the final product.

This means we can't turn a design out 'while you wait' but we believe that is in fact, a good thing.
