Modernist EnerPHit Plus
This 1960s modern concrete London home originally designed by architect Michael Blackstock has been retrofitted to the EnerPHit Plus certified standard. The retrofit has been designed by RDA Architects with Passivhaus design by Ecospheric. The retrofit involved the specification of natural insulants, plasters, and triple glazed timber windows with solar panels on the roof to generate electricity, resulting in a house which uses 88% less energy than the average UK home.
The "upside down" layout and modernist aesthetic has been maintained with some reorganisation of the layout to replace the original ground floor parking with a lobby, study, bedroom with ensuite, as well as utility and plant room. The existing condition of the building presented a challenge to the design and retrofit process, but novel solutions and technologies were employed to deliver a comfortable and low energy home. The project was named as a finalist in the 2023 UK Passivhaus Awards residential retrofit category.
