Stansted Mountfitchett

This design is for a simple extension but with a big impact on the layout of the ground floor. By introducing new flow from the entrance to the living space a new connection has been created between the front rooms and the rear garden.

Brief
The brief for this project was simple, more space for living! Our clients wanted to create a bigger kitchen space, create a utility room, enlarge the WC and convert the garage into usable internal space. We were to potentially look into extending the living space and adding light into the dining area.

Concept
Architecturally the extension has a vaulted roof that makes a small extension feel so much bigger with the extra ceiling height and rooflights allowing light to pour in. The Living space is connected from the the front to the back of the house through glazed sliding doors, giving the clients the option to close off or open the whole house up.
A feature of our design is a geometric timber balustrade for the stairs. This is an architectural piece of art that creates a privacy separation between the stair and living space, while also providing a safe stair for the kids to play on!

Challenges
In many cases, including on this project, we advise our clients to speak to a party wall consultant. You must tell your neighbours if you are building on or at the boundary of your 2 properties, working on an existing party wall or party structure, or digging below and near to the foundation level of their property. Our party wall consultant is incredibly knowledgable and informative regarding all aspects of the Party wall process.
