Whilst I agree with the 'smell issue', it is good use of space for occasional visitors. We have just had all our relatives to stay and one person had to sleep on the floor of the lounge, so a mezzanine made from the loft would have been far better. All we need to do is empty out the loft (like that's ever going to happen!).

We had a loft conversion done by a well known London loft conversion company. Half way through the job they told us there wouldn't be room for a bath in the en suite bathroom. That's when we found out the importance of the staircase design. Our stairs were fitted above the existing stairs. If they turn as late as possible to maximise the room width (as the designer had decided to do without explaining this to us) then the space at the head for the bathroom is smallest. If the stairs turn earlier then you get a larger bathroom (with room for a bath in our case) and a narrower bedroom. After a stand off the stairs were ripped out and reconfigured giving us what we want.
